So i just replaced my old RM100 with an RM2652 and after getting everything in place i noticed their is a huge open space behind the fridge. Now i understand the reason for it but my question is....has anyone used it for safe storage [none flammable or dangerous goods] or is one just best to leave it as open space?

Before I replaced my original fridge with a Norcold 641.3 absorption fridge, I kept a couple of extension cords behind it, and a few other things that I can't remember.
Since installing the new fridge, I leave that area completely empty. There is room for some kind of storage back there, but I just don't want to block any airflow to the back of the fridge. Plus, the gas line (rubber hose) to the absorption fridge takes up a little of that space and I don't want to take a chance of something shifting around and compromising that line.

I've installed a on-demand hot water heater in that space. Works great. Pictures of at least a couple of installs, including mine, are on Gene Fishers or Bdub's websites.

It is just roomy enough for a good on-board fire suppression system. That
is the only thing I would consider ever putting behind the burner end of a
fridge. But, through the years, I have seen some incredibly stupid stuff
stored in those spaces. I always advise owners to get that combustible
stuff out of there sooner than later.

It sounds absurdly stupid, but it's worked perfectly for me: Behind the
X-Birchaven's Dometic 2652 I've got a wire basket hanging at the top of the
outside vent with a couple of seldom-used long extension cords stowed in
it. Below that at the front are two 2-stage bottle jacks and a wheel
chock. Below at the rear of the compartment is a re-packaged Sears 1.5 hp
120vac compressor connected via check valves to the rear suspension.
That's controlled at the lower/raise switch panel behind the license plate
for use at the,dump station. All of that's kept away from the
refrigerator's components by a 1-1/2" high fiberglassed "dam" for water
exclusion and an expanded metal "fence" for everything else.
I keep nothing flammable there, and nothing to seriously obstruct air
flow. With the limited external storage on the 23', I would REALLY miss
that compartment! And would have for the past 22 years.

Ooops,
After reading Jim Hupy's comment I realized that I forgot to mention that in addition to an on-demand hot water heater behind the refrigerator, I also have a fire-suppression system in that area. Lots of space.

Since I have an all-electric fridge, I can use that storage space. That's where I store the water hose, electrical cords, spare oil, tranny and PS fluid along with a funnel. A few other things I can't remember.
If I had a propane fridge, I would not store anything in there except a fire extinguisher system.

I like the previous posters have nothing back there except an automatic deploy fire extinguisher and a drip pan for the condensate tube from the refrigerator to drain in to.
