I'm in the early stages of a different type of build. This will be a rather slow process as there are a number of unique challenges facing me. I hesitate to even share until further along but a good friend (Wally) thinks some may appreciate watching. Just a warning, it may never come to fruition but the journey should be fun.
I'm building new rear control arms for the 'project' GMC and have been working on a method to make the brakes work as a reaction arm setup. This sends the braking action straight to the frame instead of the tire/control arm and makes a tremendous difference in stopping distances- nearly drops stopping distance 50% over the stock system. It's been quite a challenge so far...

Thanks for sharing, Hal
It's great to see well thought through approaches to issues we all share. Like having the engine too close to the driver.

Interesting solution to combining several improvements into a tight package.
I’m quite curious to see how you will build the actual suspension arm. To minimize flexing, it will take a stout piece.

GMC.LES wrote on Fri, 15 May 2020 03:17Nicely done. It will be interesting to see if those arms will flex and then return to position any better than the OE units after encountering road obstacles.
Perhaps road testing them on the rear position only of an existing coach might be an effort worth undertaking.

I have my doubts they will do much flexing Les. I'm planning on building a 'true track' type support to help protect things. I want to protect the bogey box/pins as I think they will be stressed more in this application. With the extra support from the added bearing and acting as a stop for arm movement I think it will be OK. Lots of balls in the air with this build Hal

I had some feedback that my last video was a bit confusing. I've tried to explain things a little better here.

Thanks, Hal... pretty clear now. Question: how will the drive axles pass by/through the frame?
It occurs to me that the electric drive folks might need this sort of system once batteries shrink by a few orders of magnitude.

As I'm building a new frame a loop will be required for axle/half shaft clearance. Driving the rear wheels should let me hide any in floor intrusion of the differential or half shafts (if necessary, it'll be close) under the bed. The stretch makes room for the rear wheel drive with about a foot extension behind the axle. The taller new frame will help with ground clearance especially with the 12" added overhang.
Lots of fun, thanks for watching.
