Fortunately, when it comes to the rear track, they are almost never going to check.
So, legal becomes about everything you can get away with?

How wide do you think a tilt bed tow truck is? The move 8 ft wide vehicles and containers on them and still have rails on the side.

Yes, that width was allowed in some states on certain highways but not every where. I just looked on line and it appears now that most, or all, states are now 8'6" on all highways with 12 feet or winder lanes. California use to be one that was 8' max but now it shows that 8.5' is legal in the People's Republic too.
Interesting that a few provinces are shown at 8'5". I'll bet it is a rounding of something metric.
The guy that delivered my container had 2" to 3" rails on both sides of it making the truck around 8'6" wide.

The bids are already north of what I would/could pay, but I am keenly
interested in the installation of the springs to replace the air bags.
Does anyone have drawings or other design alternatives?

Thanks!! This kind of thing was done a number of years ago by Joe and Randy Johnson. It was always fun to see them pull up, open the back hatch and back their "Mini" out of the GMC. These were the original Mini Coopers that Randy restored as a hobby. Randy use to bring his "Moak" which was RHD. He and his Dad, Joe, would take it for a ride in town. Joe would sit on the left side (normally the drivers side) with Randy driving the RHD, and as they were riding, Joe would read a newspaper. Drew a lot of stares!! For sleeping, the bed was raised up and the car went in under the bed. On arriving at a campground, the car would come out and the bed down for sleeping. Joe is in his 90's now and just a sharp as a tack. Decided to stop driving when two things happened. Lost his keys and found them in the refrigerator. And cut his whole lawn without putting the deck down. They were members of the Greater Midwest Classics, and now moved to Utah. To our dismay we don't see them much anymore. Such great people!!
