long story short we overheated 124 miles from tucson in phoenix on our way to disney and some Miguel love at MGM-GMC. humming right along with traffic etc, start hearing a noise. i think maybe speedo cable as the needle has a little bounce in it. , couple of surges, Hmm maybe some loss of fuel? swap tanks, see the gauge move from full to 3/4 another surge, flip the switch to add the electric fuel pump, maybe d. call AAreaded heat soak? start loosing power, and the temp gauge moves from just over a 1/4 to over 3/4. we stall out at the top of the off ramp. I-10 headed west and 38th Ave. Call AAA, get stuff lined up. hissing and POP! wait a bit and open the passenger side cover. the overflow tank lid has popped and is the point of origin to the coolant now on the pavement. HMMM, 20 min later if fill back up with 50-50, the two gallons i have does not top us up. coach starts and we roll a bit down the road to QT for more analyzing. get more coolant top up...idling fine, temp looks good. oh wait, there's a steam shower coming out the tail pipe. guess i've got one or more clean combustion chambers. bummer. AAA sent out a wonderful gent named Ken from Western Towing and we talked GMC. he wanted to pick from the back but understood that was a no no with front wheel drive. he got us a trailer rig instead. nice end to a stressful situation.the fam and i packed up into the follow vehicle and off to Disney. the niece guided the coach to rest back at the Casa. will be pulling heads etc next week. getting to know the rig slowly but surely, still quite happy with this purchase and have plenty value left to sink back in it.

Seeing as you have two listed in your sig file, I'm thinking this is not your first rodeo with "adjusted" plans! Sorry for your inconvenience though. On our way to a family event 800 miles we had a heat related fuel problem and found an airport about 2 miles away, parked coach for $5 a day, rented a car and made the party. Returned and ironed out the RV a few days later.

Stephen,
I'm in Tucson and have a pair of heads if you need a core. The only drawback is that one is a "J" head and the other is a "K" head. Different size intake valves. They came off my coach that way. If it turns out that you only need one, I've got you covered. Larry's Engine and Marine is the place to take them in Tucson. They have LOTS of experience with Olds engines.
Let me know if you're interested. I'm on the Black List or contact me here.

Stephen,
If it ends up that you have a cracked head, call me at 5 two 0 - two 4 0 - Nine 8 3 six if you need a core head.
Larry's can get you the gaskets you need. I recommend Dick Paterson's intake manifold gaskets with SS block-off plates for the exhaust crossover.
Also, I have had excellent luck with Dave Lenzi's embossed exhaust manifold gaskets, that is if you do not have headers.

should find some time today and through the weekend to get the heads off.got to looking at all the paperwork / receipts that came with it and looked under the hatch, got a edelbrock aluminum manifold. believe that should mean no crossover to worry about. any ways, started draining coolant last night and should get into it this eve.

Stephan,
Like I said, if you have any questions you think I might be able to help with, please don't hesitate to call me. I will be attending the GMCSJ rally at Casino Del Sol this weekend. I'm pretty sure there will be at least one other GMC there besides ours. You're welcome to drop by if you'd like.

for sure, we will stop by. we've registered with the national club just not yet with SJ, the weekend sounds like a great time to finally do it and get some face time with a GMCforum contributor.

I'm not getting some of the emails, apparently those going to the Phorum.
So, someone be sure Stephen gets this link:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g3057-cylinder-head-damage-from-exhaust-crossover-plugs.html
It says that his aluminum manifold, if from Edelbrock, is NOT insurance
against needing crossover blocking, but an invitation to destroy his
cylinder heads.

Ken,
Your email came through just fine. So there is no need for us to forward it to him. I just thought I would let you know.

Great pics...A question about the "dimpled end of the manifold"...I am just
about to pull my intake (to install blockoff plates, modello version, and
gaskets) and have read that everyone uses silicone at the end to seal
instead of gasket. Are these dimples "peened" into the gasket area before
installing silicone for staying power? Of course I'll be checking for
cracks etc. Also not planning on using a turkey tray, just the blockoff
plates and gaskets.
Any thoughts
Rich

thanks for the heads up, will get the plugs from the side of the engine as well. Guessing now since there is an EGR block off plate and the choke stove it must have exhaust crossovers....putting together the list of needed items as well as while im in there" stuff. have already purchased silicone oil tube 90 and plug wires from Springfield. have the alternator and AC tightening kits from Applied. figure may as well get the alternator double pulley purchased and installed while its out. Will order up belts, coolant hoses as well as block off plates ( will i need to convert to electric choke if using block off plates ?). There is a fuel hose from the FP to the carb, will get that replaced with something stronger and insulated, may as well replace the filter in the spreadbore..... looks like the PO's mechanic had a penchant for duct tape and bailing wire. gotta look at the vacuum hoses, there is nothing connected to the christmas tree, only a couple bolts holding the M/T valve covers on, but Thorley headers ! I guess take a lotta pictures and go slow, just signed up for THE GMC MOTORHOME PHOTO ARCHIVE and will start an Album.

Ken, I watched Mr John swap the manifold from the lunched engine onto the rebuild on his test stand. He took gray high temp sealer and ran a perfect 1/8th inch bead along the front and rear edges of the block. Then he and his helper VERY CAREFULLY set the manifold directly down on the gaskets and bead and bolted it down tight without allowing it to move sideways. He told me "If it slides, you need to lift it off and reseal". So far, dry on both ends.

When you plug the crossover, you will need to go to an electric choke.
There are two kinds:
* Some are just a choke heater that most wire into the alternator output.
* Some come with a switch that you are instructed to mount someplace that exposes it to engine temperature.
I have the first. It has been very effective.
We are all glad to hear that you are approaching this the way you are. By doing the preventive work now, you will have a much lower chance of waiting for help to arrive on the side of the road.
