On Monday SHE reported to me an engine problem that perhaps someone here
can help me with: SHE returned from the gym at 9:30 AM. At 5:30 PM, as it
began to get dark outside, I noticed the headlights of her '04 Lexus
LS-430 were ON. When I opened the driver's side door to turn them off, I
noticed the tachometer was registering several hundred rpm and the door
buzzer was ON! So I turned the ignition OFF (her key does not have to be
inserted, only nearby). YEP, she'd gotten out and left the engine running
-- for 8 hours!!!

The engine problem, according to HER: "I can't hear that engine running!"
We're gonna have to figure out something to do about that! We've only had
that car about 12 years; I don't want to have to ever trade cars again in
this lifetime! :-)

Ken tie an led to the key ignition circuit and put it in the top of the drivers door panelto show its runninh....like some of the alarm lights ....if thats not enough tie both the led and an electric door latch wire to the horn....lol.

You could also verify with the Lexus dealer to see if there is a horn feature attached to the vehicle that is not enabled (alot of feature back in the day had to be enable with a manufactuers scanner).....like a new car with keyless start, if its running and you exit with the key it locks the doors and blows the horn once as a warning.

So she walked away with the fob and it did not time out and shut itself off?

We have had Prius vehicles which were left “on” all weekend in our outdoor
bullpen with the key 50’ away behind a concrete wall. Pretty unnerving when
you come in to work on Monday and all the cars in the lot have frosted
glass and paint except for one. Well....at least we know the cooling system
works.

My "daily driver" is an '87 Cherokee with a Borla exhaust system on it. I NEVER have to worry about that. Wink

Ken, if this message had been sent by anyone but you, I might have been
inclined to answer differently. But you are a fine gentleman, and I like
your wife as well, so I will try to restrain myself.
I agree, those cars run so quietly that it is difficult to hear if
they are running or not. With lights and accessories that more or less
manage themselves, it would be easy to just walk away from a running car.
If it were me, I might use the key rather than the push buttons on the fob.
But, your car might be new enough that it no longer has a key start
feature. In that case, I don't have a solution for that. Darn things are
too much like a refrigerator than an automobile.

Our Tesla is kind of "On" all the time. Sentry mode lights up the cameras (there are 8 of them) and records whatever is coming close to the car when it's sitting. It also flashes the lights. Other than the radio and HVAC there is no difference between that state and sitting at a stoplight! If I were to leave my phone in the car anyone could get in and drive away, the only "keys" are more like credit cards than skeleton keys. Thank goodness we're all so attached to our phones.

You should get three warning beeps if you walk away from the car with the FOB while it's running. If not then you probably have a defective door switch. This was a common problem with earlier Lexus vehicles. This is according to my brother who has had several.

Ken,

Please make sure to get a good & loud carbon monoxide detector for your
garage (and inside as well). I had friends that died (the whole family)
from CO poisoning from a car accidentally left running overnight in
their garage.

Hi Ken,

My internet has been out all day.
I can see I'm a little late in recommending a Borla
exhaust system. My wife's G8 GT has a Borla exhaust
and that 6 liter sounds so sweet idling you could never
walk away without hearing it.

I like the side pipes idea...and to start I would remove just the muffler and replace it with straight pipe. Simple and reversible. Too loud? Put the glasspak in there and try that. Simple work for qualified people with the proper tools. Be glad it's not a hybrid with the random engine run times.

Hi Ken, it is good to hear you and HER are doing well. Some times you gotta just do what it takes and realize it's about her. Tesla in Atlanta have a few 2020 Xs in stock. I like the red one but Elaine might like the white one. It is all wheel drive, with a range of over 300 miles per charge. It will do O-60mph faster than you can say "zero to sixty". (2.7 seconds). No buying gas, no engine to hear, no engine to turn off, it is off if it's not moving. SHE will like driving it ! It has Auto Pilot. You buy online. Pick it and if you aren't happy you get your money back.

The performance exhaust I bought for my Tesla was a total waste of money though.

I did that once with a Ford Flex I rented in Chicago. Drove to a meeting in
Lake County, and found the engine running 6 hours later when leaving the
meeting. It was first experience with keyless ignition.

That was a 2013 Flex. The 2014 Flex I subsequently bought had a timeout—if
the car sat in Park, it would require you to confirm continued running
after 15 or 20 minutes, or it would shut off.

sunroof not leak” Denney
