Riveted Vin tag located under the passenger side access cover on the front
of the coach. Complete V.I.N tag includes serial number and GVW weight
ratings.

Gino and Rose,

Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum.....

You found your way here, and that will serve you well.

You should also look up and join the local chapter that is probably Cascaders, Maybe Western States as well, but I will let others fill that in.

Something I hope you will do (and the reason will be down the page) is to build a sigfile. This is easy as you seem to be working the group from the forum. So, go to <Control Panel/Account Settings> and then Preferences. Put in your names so we know who it is we are helping, a bit about your coach so you don't have to keep saying it is a 76 Birchaven (we know that makes it a 23') and include a location because the half that read this as e-mail didn't see the Spanaway WA in the header. There are probably other owners in striking range that can be valuable assistance.

I hope Ken Henderson comes by soon, he knows more about Birchaven than most of us.

Why is this so important? Because this is a supportive and helping community the likes of which are very rare. Before you have been here long, you will probably get to see it in action. The power of this community is awesome in the true meaning of the word. With luck, you may never have to draw on it, but if you do, just hang on tight. The only other community that I know of that is this supportive and tightly bound is that of the watermen that are my world. For that reason, I have taken to welcoming new owners here much as you might be welcomed there. So,

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.

Welcome Gino and Rose

Matt

Thank you so much for the responses. I will definitely update our profile. In the meantime, I am now confused as to what our coach really is. It is 26 feet, so from what I am seeing it may not be a Birchaven after all (although I believe that was what we were told by the gentleman we purchased it from. I guess it is possible it is a Transmode, since the original owner had the interior customized to his liking.
I think we may have found the original owner's son and have left a voicemail for him with the hope that he can shed some light on the matter. Waiting for a call back. I will keep looking for something that might lead us in the right direction.
Long shot here, but is there anywhere or anything related to the TZE number that might give an indication other that manufacture date, etc, which I have already determined. Thank you all again for your help!!

For the purpose of locating and keeping track of all Classic GMC Motorhomes.
Please fill out and submit the online form at www.gmcmhregistry.com

* Note about the Build Date of your GMC: From the decal on the inside of
the glove box door - look for a number on the top line just left of center,
similar to "032174". The example indicates the build date as March 21st,
1974. *

A Birchaven is only a 23 foot. It also is a Transmode converted to a motorhome by Coachmen Industries. Coachman also converted 26’ transmodes. They were called Royales.

Royale's and Birchhavens I think left the Pontiac, Mi. plant as TransModes.
Completely unfinished. And they went to Jimmy Industries, Coachman works,
where they were outfitted. Birchhaven, I believe was a name given to the
light colored construction materials used in their uplifting. Length of
coaches was anyone's guess. All the Royale's that I have worked on were
upfitted with Eastern Walnut with a dark finish. But, I have not seen them
all, and there may be exceptions to what i just told you. Our GMC historian
may have the straight dope.

Gino and Rose, if you still have the glove box sticker, the first thing listed is model #. This is an example found on the photo site.

I haven’t heard from you yet if it’s 23’ or 26’. You can just take a tape measure to check that. The result would rule out several models.

If the door is immediately behind the passenger seat it’s likely a 23’. If the door is about 7’ behind the passenger seat it is likely a 26’

Here are the wiring diagrams for the royal and birchaven coaches.

http://www.bdub.net/wirediagrams/1977_Coachmen_26RB_Electrical_and_Plumbing_Drawings.pdf
and
http://www.bdub.net/wirediagrams/1977_Coachmen_23RB_Electrical_and_Plumbing_Drawings.pdf

They should be considered a good guide line as Coachman sometime did some free lancing.

You don’t have to order them they are available online from BDUB. If you want to get a large size then Ken H can direct you to the proper source,.

Funny - I don't know why I always thought the Birchaven was named for Alex Birch.

Larry, my recollection, and probably can be confirmed by Bill Bryant, is that the Birchaven WAS named after, and in honor of Alex Birch, inventor and producer of the now, hard to find Birch screen door for the GMC. Just sayin'...
