I sure hope Y'All appreciate the risky equipment experiment I've just
started for Y'All!
Since the Firestone tires on my GMC were installed in Eau Claire, WI on 21
Sep 2014, at 44564 miles, and it's now about 5 years later and the odo's at
80400, I figured I'd better replace the tires (moving the newer tire which
replaced the tread-thrown Firestone to the spare) before GMCMI Mansfield.
Since Cooper is the only truly American tire manufacturer left (NOT the
only tires MADE in USA tho'), I thought I'd be patriotic and try them.
Despite good reports from some GMCers over the years, the current reviews I
read, of which there were many, were not very reassuring. So I started
researching others, leaving out those brands I've had less-than-stellar
experience with (Bridgestone, Firestone, Goodyear, Michelin,...), I looked
at Kumho, Sumitomo, and a bunch of other furrin brands. I finally came
across one that sounded at least as good as those $200+ each ones for a
better price.
So, last Wednesday, I ordered, from Walmart, 6 new 225/75R16-115 tires.
The specs on them are the same as on those MUCH more expensive ones.
Yesterday, they arrived at the local store. I removed, pressure washed,
and polished all the Alcoas, and took them in for the tires to be mounted
(Walmart won't do motorhomes). I provided them with 6 each each 4 oz. bags
of Walmart airsoft pellets for balancing the tires. The "service manager"
said he'd heard of such, but never used them.
Today I got the final 2 wheels back and took the coach for a test drive.
I'm delighted -- even during brief excursions to 70 & 75 mph, they were
perfectly smooth and a quiet as any tires I've ever had on the GMC.
Now for the scarey experimental part: The total cost (without the beads),
for the 6 tires delivered and mounted, including the disposal fee, was
$550.50! On-line only -- the store couldn't order them. Of course, if
they cost me $2-3000+ in fiberglass repairs, etc., I won't be so proud of
that. But then, Y'All won't have to follow my lead and buy "Westlake
SL309" tires, so the experiment will at least benefit Y'All. :-)
I DO think I'll back off a little on my speed and try to pay closer
attention to my tire temperatures.
Oh yeah, a bit more about airsoft pellets: I only had enough on hand for 3
wheels. Those were 0.12 grams each. This time, I decided to try different
ones because I didn't like the looks of the current 0.12's: 0.25 g. each.
They were a little more expensive (about $16 for 5000 vs $11 for 5000
lighter ones), but since fewer are needed, the cost will be better. One
thing I regrettably forgot to do was ask for some of the used beads back so
I could see how they've stood up to their 36,000 mile ride.

I replaced mine, too—my old set were also installed in 2014.
And I bought another set of the random-brand Chinese tires that I’ve used
since buying the Eagle wheels. The old ones will now grace one of the
snow-plow pickups in my tire guy’s fleet.
I also pressure-washed mine. But I didn’t polish them. Lipstick—pig—you
know.
But I’m still mid-rear-suspension project, so no judgments, yet.
I’ll have a big write up on the rear suspension project when I’m done.
Today was the first day I made only forward progress, rather than having to
circle back for some reason.

I am very interested in your tire experiment.
I have used Firestone’s on my various coaches and been fairly happy w/ them. My Firestone pricing was about twice what you are using in your experiment - consequently my interest.
I generally drive 65 to 70 mph and have not yet tried the beads for balancing.
Thanks for sharing your info and conducting this experiment.

Ken, was your biggest complaint on the B.F.Goodrich/Michelin tires the cost?
I have used Goodrich exclusively since I got my coach many years ago.
Several cross country trips involved, including a TransCanada trip, and I
have never had a out of round, tread separation, or a flat tire on my coach.
I saw the side of a GMC absolutely in shreds from a 3 year old
Firestone that came apart at speed. That was about a $3500.00 repair.
Coopers have a good reputation in the West, as do Toyo's.
Just my experience, yours may vary.

I think I paid about $119 each for Cooper HT3s 2 1/2 years ago. It was buy 3 and 4th free plus a $70 prepaid Visa card bonus. And I truly believe best bang for buck and not from China. Slightly more stabile directionally than the LTXs they replaced but maybe not as good in wet due to continuous shoulder pattern where LTX were open blocks. Splitting hairs. Never a problem or rebalance needed on either brand.

Hi Ken. As for Westlake tires I have been very pleased with the 16" set we had on our previous Continental and current VW Rotan van. Neither a motorhome but both heavy front wheel drive vehicles. Tire wear has been un-noticeable. On the Lincoln they were 4 years old, driven daily to work, and looking pretty much new when we passed it on to Deb.
As for our coach we still are running the Weld 16.5 wheels and bought new tires from Walmart online before our trip to Tallahassee for the International. I found these MileStar for @ $94 at the time. 7 was 700+ change delivered to my house. The Goodyear 159s I took off were running balance beads but since the local tire store charges $15 a tire to mount and snap-on spin balance I just went that route. Same price if on or off coach or balancing or beads, big truck or lawnmower.
See you in Ohio. You are welcome to stop going or coming of course the welcome mat is out.

Yep, those are the ones. They look, sound, and ride good. The
endorsements from Chuck and Fred make me feel even better than I already
did about the experiment. Unless they cause collateral damage, they'll be
hard to beat at $83.41 each.

I bought one of those 4 years ago as a spare. It had never been on the
ground when I gave it to my son last Thursday to replace his older,
bulging, spare. All I can report is, "It's held air for all that time."

No, they're light truck tires, just like all we ordinarily use -- the "115"
= "LRE" = 2680 lbs load rating for 225/75-16 tires.

Lots of dealers (Google "Westlake SL309"), but I got mine from Walmart
online -- they did not appear on the local store's computer. The tires
were delivered to the local store and installed there without charge,
except for the government-dictated $1.50 each disposal fee.

I thought Light Truck tires in this size would be labeled LT225/75 16 with LRE or 10 Ply Rating displayed somewhat to the right on the tire.

Had somebody posted that Walmart would not install tires on motorhomes?
I will need new tires if/when I ever get my coach on the road again.

Ken & Mac: When I ordered my mile star 16.5 tires from Walmart there was an option to deliver to store or home. I did not know if delivered to store they would mount free. I'll check on that Ken, Tennessee might be different. I did call Sams club and they will not mount tires bought from Walmart. The Walmart local says they didn't do motorhomes. I put my spare in the truck with a new tire and went riding around, went to big Walmart on I-40 and they looked at it in the truck and said they would be glad to mount and balance but it was first come basis and they were 2 hours wait. I was told if Walmart balanced and mounted I could get road hazard warranty but no price or charges was discussed. Tires I have bought from Sams charged $9 @ iirc for mounting and road hazard a few years back.
Ken since you took your tires in to get mounted did you get road hazard or was it offered?
