Greetings all

I have been perusing the site for in-dash radio options and found a bunch of old posts but nothing recommended that is still available;

So, I have just opened up the dash for a Single DIN space and would like as much bang for the buck as I can get.

Minimum is AM / FM / CD, nowadays you probably also get MP3, Bluetooth and USB options in a vanilla unit -

So, what have you got that you're happy with and is still available for sale new?

We have a Kenwood that I installed about five or more years ago. It has all of the features you mentioned, and a 3mm outlet and a USB outlet. I could check the model, but it's probably irrelevant. Just go with a brand name and get the features you want. Jim Bounds is a great resource for electronics as he worked in that field for years. Give him a call.

I've got a pioneer DEH-X6800BT

Has everything and works as it should. Not expensive $60.00 on amazon.

I’ve installed a JVC head unit and replaced the speakers around the coach. The sound quality is good - the front channel is for the cab speakers and the rear is for the mid + rear speakers.

It plays cd’s and DVD’s but I’ve never used it. The PO installed a collar that allowed a deep unit like this but just doesn’t look great.

My thought was that I’d use it to play video over a monitor. (Never).

I’d look for a single din mechless (no mechanical disk, cd, dvd) and carve out the dash to make it fit.

The mechless units can be less deep.

Just about anything will do the job here. You're not looking for a high fidelity or volume, especially with stock speaker setup.

I would highly recommend getting something with Bluetooth. Most of the new units don't have a cd player as it's essentially useless at this point. Spotify and your cell phone and you've got every record known to man at your disposal.

No bluetooth is not up to the fidelity specs of a CD but in this application it makes no difference.

Personally, I like having the option of a CD player in my dash. We frequently travel in remote locations in the West that do not have good cell service, so the services that depend on data reception are sometimes kind of sketchy.

I recommend against pioneer currently, especially with Android phones. They
force the use of their app to steam music and it lacks the basic
functionality of blue tooth streaming.

Example - you can't stream Amazon music.

I have been impressed with kenwood head units under $100.

CD? What's that????

We're all USB devices now a days my friend! As a matter of fact, i'd bet
you could load your whole CD collection to your phone, and still use it
while out of cell phone range. But who has time for all of that cd ripping?

My latest deck (the pioneer that i do not like) is only USB/phone/radio.
Its a full din, but 40% as deep and very light. It makes for installation
locations that were not possible before

players, it would seem that you guys must have cured all your starting,
charging, steering, stopping, oil consumption issues, and are preparing to
kick back, drive safely to and from your destination, no matter how remote
and distant. You might just consider that that coach is over 40 years old,
and might need a bit of listening to as it rumbles down the highway. Jus'
sayin.

I'm planning to use this $17 bluetooth FM transmitter from Amazon, already have one in a car with no aux jack and was surprised how well it works for handsfree phone, gps directions, and streaming music from pandora simultaneously

voltage at the bottom of the screen. They also have a microSD slot for
storing up to 32GB of music for playback, a charging port for the phone,

They work so well I am planning to go back to an OEM stereo with an
add-on amplifier for the stock look with the new capabilities.

Jim- a loud stereo is a requirement to be able to turn up to cover the sounds that a GMC makes! ignorance is bliss!

with that said, I am looking at the possibility of doing away with the dash radio, and mounting my tablet in that spot. going with a larger bluetooth speaker. dash space for my tablet(EBL/Whats up display) is limited, and I want to get it up further without blocking windshield or other dash gauges.

what I have been trying to see, is how feasible it is to use a bluetooth speaker with some sort of handsfree cell phone microphone for the visor. But I think no mater what, it is too loud in the GMC for a true handsfree cell phone conversation?

If you have an early coach with the air suspension knobs in the dash, do
not mount anything in that vicinity. That is your access panel for the nuts
that hold the power brake booster to the firewall. If you clutter that
area, you will regret it when ( not if) it comes time to replace the
booster.

I am using the Jabra Freeway and it works great in the GMC. In fact it worked so good I bought a second one for the one in Europe.

Lay off Clarion. Their supports is basically useless. If you deal with Crutchfield, they will support what they sell. Except my Clarion, which they tried mightily with Cklariopn to get some answers and weren't successful.
