Anyone come up with a way to connect a tarp to the drip rail? Sadly unless another used awning comes up for sale it wont be in the cards for a bit....

What I did on a race trailer [also looking for the long deal on a used awning]:
Poly rope [nylon sttretches and will pull out] 3/8 pulled down the rail. Lube w silly-cone spray first and use a fish hook w barb cut to pull through. Tie loops in the ends.
1" schedule 40 [stiffer] pipe the lenght of tarp, zip tied to tarp. Run more rope trough pipe and leave enough to make loops att he ends, then snap links to attach
Another on the outside full length.
Couple more PVC pipe poles at the ends w screw eyes and tie off to dog tie out augers or cindr blocks in a V pattern. Use nylon rope there.

A couple pool noodles sliced on one side will cushion it on the coach.
A sun shade tarp gives better airflow but no rain protection
looks redneck, but works.

Look up 'rope and pole' awning. The drip edge channel on the GMC and all awning attachment channels for that matter go back to this very old method of doing exactly what you are wanting to do; which is to attach a canvas for shelter to the side of the camper. It's just a cord hemmed into the edge of the canvas, and that slips into the channel.
We just tossed our carefree awning to the curb for the scrappers. I didn't like the way it looked hanging on the side of the GMC, or the holes in the roof where it was attached. We decided to go with a small rope and pole awning for those times when we are camped in one spot for more than a couple days.
