So I'm going to bite the bullet and buy the whole exhaust system. A couple of questions for you pro's Smile

1) From Applied? any other options?
2) Double muffler up front or single muffler in the back?
3) 2 1/2" or 3"
4) I assume stainless is the best?
5) Do ether require heat protection for coach?

Thanks Folks for the help!!

Don't go cheap.
Put a heat shield above the muffler.

I went with the stock configuration, double mufflers up front because I didn't want to have to make any modifications to make the single rear muffler fit.

I bought the aluminized 3" system from Applied, but you might want to go with SS due to your location. It was easy to install, except for the head pipes (from the exhaust manifolds to the mufflers) which are not included. The Applied system is designed for use with headers. Maybe Jim has improved the kit and offers the head pipes for manifolds now. I don't know.

We can supply adapters to hook up to the stock exhaust pipe that comes down
from the manifold.

Is there a reason to not put a single muffler just after the Y, before the exhaust enters the passenger side frame?

Here is what I did for my rear mounted. Picked up the "Y" from Jimmy K and did the rest myself. What a PIA with the trial and error fitting...multiple trips to the muffler shop for bending...etc...etc. If or when I have to do it again, I'd buy the ready made SS system from Jimmy, install it and be done with it. I like the rear mount muffler. Reduction in heat and noise. Make sure you put heat shields between the muffler/mufflers and the floor. JWID

Our new style SS 3" rear mufflers are now made slightly smaller so it fits
in the rear section easier.

Jim,
Will your rear muffler fit on a Royale with a black tank?

I did something similar to Larry. My coach had 2 magnaflow mufflers up front installed by my PO and 3" exhaust to the rear. Everything was in like new condition except one of the mufflers burned a hole the top larger than a softball. My inspection of the other muffler revealed It was about to do the same thing at the same top spot. I tried to get magnaflow to give me some new ones to replace the mufflers and they refused to talk to me.

So I read about Emery's single Flowmaster in the rear and decided to do it that way. It was a simple change over that I did on the floor in my hangar. I installed 2 pipes where the mufflers were and cut the rear pipe and installed one rear mounted flowmaster muffler.

Dan Gregg later that year had a similar problem with burning through the top of the muffler. It burned a hole clear through the floor. I saw his coach at Jim K's. Dan and I fashioned and installed two heat shields out of some scrap in Jim's scrap pile. Then he had Jim's guys install a complete new 2 muffler exhaust system. It was great watching his guys do the installation. Everything just slipped together and fit perfectly. I think it took them about 1 hour to replace every thing.

Heat shields are a must on either the 1 or 2 muffler system.

FWIW, some have used old cookie sheets as heat shields. About the right size and makes. use of something that was going to be thrown out anyway. Plus when it gets hot you are treated to the smell of fresh baked chocolate chip.... YUM!!

I am working on 2.25" stock manifold to muffler pipes for 455 right now. My builder has my GM samples. I have sourced dual wall aluminized mufflers in the same form factor as original. Being dual wall they radiate less noise into the cabin, and have the burn through resistance of the originals. All road tests have been great. This is for those that want stock replacement parts which are no longer available from GM. Not trying to compete with performance systems from others. I will update with availability. I still need a good Y pipe sample to complete the project. Thanks.

Keith,
I'm sure the muffler will clear the sewer tank o the royal, just to be sure
look, as there are two configuration. Just be sure to put the heat shield
to protect the tank and the floor.

John,

I have an intact Y pipe that I took out because the (existing failed) mufflers were welded to it. I could cut that off and ship the Y to you, if it might help.

This will not be immediate, I am still working on my coach.

Yes one can use one muffler at the front. My concern is restriction on flow
as I have not found a way to make it work easily and efficiently.
I have seen some , so I will be looking into it, just need to contact me to
work on it.

Lot of you need to be aware that a muffler shop cannot bend a pipe with out
inducing restrictions.
Mandrel bends are expensive but worth the cost.
Also the Japanese Engineers figured out that having the muffler toward the
rear helps to allow exaust flow, as the pulsing waves do not get disturbed
too early.

Lot of you need to be aware that a muffler shop cannot bend a pipe with out
inducing restrictions.
Mandrel bends are expensive but worth the cost.
Also the Japanese Engineers figured out that having the muffler toward the
rear helps to allow exaust flow, as the pulsing waves do not get disturbed
too early.

John,
The stock system is available from us, but the demand is low , so cost is
high.
