Yup, 54/40 or fight came from the west coast difference over where to draw the line through all those islands and all that water. Pig war factored in, too, but that is another story. The final result is that there is one little tit of land hanging down from just south of Vancouver, BC, right near White Rock, BC is still part of the US, but you cannot get to it from the US except by boat or aircraft. It is called Point Roberts.

The Watcom county Washington sherifs deputies responsible for patrolling Point Roberts can’t drive there because they can’t take their guns across the border! We will be attending the wedding of our oldest son and his long time Vancouverite bride-to-be at Point Roberts where she has a vacation home. To get there in the Prevost we have to go into Canada near the I-5 crossing, drive west a bit and then cross the border again going south. But, it does sit just south of 54/40 so by that convention it is in the US. Sure would have been easier to just make a deal and say that little piece will be the exception to 54/40 and will stay with Canada. Most of the homes there are owned by Canadians anyway.

Another funny part about that border is Road 0 (zero). One side of that road is in the US and the other side is in Canada. No fence or markers, just houses on each side with yards going right up to Road 0 so you could walk easily from one side to the other. But, if a road crosses that border then there is a border crossing station, lots of bureaucrats on both sides, often long lines and idling cars and trucks waiting to crawl up to the crossing point and the ever present customs and ag inspectors who determine what can and cant cross the border with you. Fun stuff…..

Gerry,
Western border was finally agreed upon as being along the 49th degree latitude which Point Roberts sits slightly south of. The 54Deg/40 minute latitude which USA wanted is at the southern tip of Alaska panhandle. I suspect when the border was laid out, maps where not that accurate, hence places like Point Roberts happened.

There are others like on the south-east corner of Manitoba where Angle Township MN is located. The border is through a lake then heads north and over to the Manitoba border. Only way to get there by road is through Manitoba. There is another little tip of a point where the border starts to follow the 49th parallel to the west.
