Interesting. This is the first I have heard about some aftermarket techs causing HEI problems. Most of the add on EFI systems using the HEI distributor require hooking a wire to the HEI teach lead. Here is the instruction for the FiTech unit.

“Trigger Tach Signal: The FiTech EFI requires an rpm/trigger reference to operate. This is obtained by a connection to the negative post on a 12V coil. On HEI distributors, this connection is made to the "Tach" terminal that is indicated on the HEI distributor cap.”

Has anyone found an issue with the FiTech or other EFI units causing an ignition module or coil failure? I never did.

Nothing actually failed on the HEI. Once the tach lead was disconnected the engine ran fine. The issue was something internal in the Westac TACH/VAC gauge in my case. Some sort of internal short directed the voltage from the HEI coil to ground I guess causing loss of spark. This was on a Howell FI system with the EBL add-on.

Thanks

Gary
