Putting the beast back together and I recall when taking apart there was a brittle plastic like material between the end cap and outer rings of the housing part 12 and 13 on page 39 of the owners manual. However there is nothing showing in the manual for it. What do I use? Where do I get it and what is it called

Once you replace everything that is attached to something else. It will all be fixed.

HI Adam, there is nothing between 12 and 13. The item you are thinking about is item 22 that is located between 12 (the field assembly) and the housing bolted to the back of the engine which is item 1. It is there to serve as an air seal; you can use a piece of cork sheet, or rubber, or anything else you can come up with to go in that gap that will not be able to be sucked into the machine. It serves to prevent air leakage into the generator through the gap. Keep in mind that unlike most air cooled small engines, the Onan’s air cooling is based on a suction arrangement with the intake at the back of the generator, through the field and the armature and then across the engine cylinders and heads and then out the flywheel discharge. Since this is suction it is imperative that there be no leaks otherwise cooling can be compromised.
Make sure also that you have item 21 on page 26 around the oil filter; this is a very important seal. JimK has them, he is my source.
As for the air seals between the field and the engine I just take some cork sheet and cut some 1/4” wide pieces and use adhesive to stick them to the housing on the back of the engine. Once I bolt on the field assembly it crushes the cork a bit and keeps it captive for perpetuity. Hope that helps!
