Some might recall my posting here last spring about my coach having different size rear bearing retaining studs on each side. I only noticed this when I did the pre-load torque on the bearings and found the nut was a larger size when I went to do the Driver's side. I measured the driver's side stud to be 7/8" while the passenger side is 3/4"

The large tanged flat washer is the same on both sides, so on the smaller passenger side the tang can come out of the slot allowing it to spin. The closest washer I can find with a large outer diameter was from Dorman. It is still 1/2" smaller OD than the OEM washer (1.75"vs 2.25" for the OEM washer). The Dorman washer is about the size of the bearing inner race OD, whereas the OEM washer covers the rollers and cage as well.

Will this smaller OD washer be an issue? I suspect in case of a bearing burn-up, the larger washer will hold the wheel on the coach longer before coming off. But they all seem to come off when that happens. I'd rather not have the washer be able to spin on the stud.

I know there was a smaller spindle used on the first coaches and they were recalled and replaced with larger spindles, bearings and hubs. However I'm sure this smaller 3/4" stud spindle is not part of this recall since the bearings are the same on both sides.

Opinions? Insights?

Here is some photos of the OEM vs new washer.

Hey Bruce,
I can't answer your question but I could CNC cut you a replacement washer of the correct OD if you can send me a dimensioned drawing of what you need.

Justin,
Thanks for the offer. I've been googling around looking at trailer spindles. They seem to have washers that have a small OD. Questions on the Dexter Axel site about even needing the washer state the washer is there to isolate the sharp edges of the retaining nut from wearing on the bearing. So the OD of the Dorman washers I got would not seem to be an issue.

I'll wait for the opinion of the gurus here and if its an issue, I may take you up on your offer!

Thanks.

Would it be a bad idea to stack them? Put the smaller one against the inner race and the bigger one against it.

Todd,
That sounds like a workable solution. I wonder if there is enough room to get the cotter pin installed with the nut back another 0.10" or so.

I needed to move the coach so installed the small washers so I can't test that option at the moment.
