Yesterday we were on a major highway. Just East of Cedar Rapids Iowa. In a heavy snow storm. With visibility down to under an 1/8 of a mile. And cross winds at about 50 to 60 MPH. Traffic at 25 to 30 MPH. Not a big deal here. Great plains, and all that. So there was time to think about the area we were in. And the memory's relating to that area. As we passed an old farm house. Linda, and I got to talking about a Vince Dudek that once lived there in the 60's. This is where my age came into play. As to how I respond to those old memories. To now. In the past. I would have thought. I wonder were Vince lives now. My first thought now was. I wonder if Vince is still alive. Interesting thing to think about.
So does that mean that I'm getting real old now? Bob Dunahugh

Heard a lady volunteer at the hospital, who runs the coffee hospitality
cart talking about visiting local department stores and not recognizing
downtown Salem, or bumping into anyone that she knew. She was a spry old
lady, probably near 80 or so. Shoot, most of her friends and immediate
family are probably pushing up daisies, now.

At my uncle's 80th birthday party he said: "If you would have held this 20
years ago a lot more of my friends would have been here". He lived 19.5
years longer.

That reminds me when I was visiting my folks a few years back. They were both in their late 80s. One day they were telling me that they didn’t have any friends left as they had all died. The next day we were talking about their land line telephone. I asked why they didn’t cancel the service and save some money since they both had cell phones and they never used the land line. They said they had to keep it just in case one of their old friends tried to call them. They said that is the only phone number they would know. They weren’t very happy with me when I said “I thought you told me yesterday that all your friends were dead. How are they going to call you?”

Last week I was supposed to have a free day in Columbus, GA, my childhood
home, while SHE attended a garden club meeting. I'd been wanting a chance
to spend a day with my 3rd to 12th grade best friend who never moved from
Columbus. When I called to schedule the visit, his wife of 62 years
answered the phone. When I asked to speak to him, she replied, "Milton's
not here. He died last week. Went to bed one night and didn't get up the
next morning." Talk about a shock -- I'm afraid my response wasn't very
diplomatic: "What a wonderful way to go!" Suddenly realizing what I'd
said, I tried to recover with, "I hope you can look at it that way." "I'm
trying."

Gotta get to work disposing of all that junk in the shop and the sea-land
container before my descendants have to contend with it!

Ken;
I'm doing the same thing with all my good junk.
I call it down sizing or de-cluttering.
I just gave away my 23' GMC.
I sold my '37 Ford a month ago.
Still lots to go.

My son came down a while back and "helped ?" clean out my shop and
"Organize" my woodshed lean to next to my carport. Yesterday, I went out to
get out my hoses and de-winterize my outside hose bibs. Guess what? No
hoses to be found. He threw them all in the trash. Good real rubber 3/4"
contractor hoses. All of them. So, i texted him to see where he put them.
His answer back. "Those old things? They were all sun checked and dirty.
Threw them out." Went to home depot yesterday and replaced them. $108.70.

My parents are in their late 70s and are in the process of downsizing from 2 older properties to one newer house. My father is bringing “everything” with him. As an old mechanic, you can just imagine what that entails.

When I questioned him about moving his “stuff” and that I’d be willing to help him “sort” the junk, he said “you'll have lots of time to sort through it after i’m dead. Until then it isn’t your concern.”

It’s been over a year that they have been moving their “stuff”, a couple p/up loads a week. They are not even half-done yet. I am not relishing the thought of having to dispose/liquidate once they are gone.

Kudos to those of you that have the consideration/awareness of how the condition of your estate will affect your heirs once you are no longer with us. I can only wish that my parents thought the same.

As one of those late 70's guys, and a "old mechanic" to boot, please have
some empathy for your parents. Someday too soon, you will be looking in the
mirror and exclaim "WTF???" where did that young guy dissapear to?
Let's hope that your children aren't in too big of a rush to dispose
of your lifelong accumulation of memories.
I just spent $108.00 dollars to buy new hoses because my well
intentioned son threw out my perfectly serviceable ones because he deemed
them to be Old Junk when he was "helping me by cleaning up my storage shed"
Can't find crap after he organized it. That new hose? Made out of something
that you can't even uncoil when it is cold. I have to hook it up, turn on
the water, and let it sit in the hot sun before I can uncoil it. My old
hoses were supple and easy to deploy. Kinda like a well worn jacket.
Grrrrrrr.

Our car collection consist of 15. 5 convertible. 4 real COPO Yenkos, plus 1 fake. Then the Chevelle's/Impalas. I want to get ride of ALL the extra parts. So 5 years ago. I made an arrangement with a restoration shop. To have each car restored, or re restored. Most were on the re restored list. I'm down to the last 3. I have 1 convert there now. I'm to pick it up on May 17th. The next one is to be taken to them September 22. And then picked up January 18th. When the last one is done. ALL those extra parts will BE GOING. Extra GMC parts are going now. We now have lots of extra house stuff on Craig's list. I'm 73. Should have done this years ago. It]s a GREAT feeling to know that our kids won't have to deal with this STUFF. Bob Dunahugh

JimH,
I’m mostly in agreement with you.
At 55, I already look in the mirror and wonder where that youthful kid disappeared to. I am also a career mechanic, having worked on turbine engines for 35+ years. With a second, fully equipped automotive shop at home, I know the value in quality tools and I have a healthy collection of my own. Some of my tools are as old as I am. Unfortunately my daughters are not gearheads, so, much of my treasured “stuff” has little value to them. They often ask “why do you keep that old dusty tool?”

My intention as I get older is to involve my daughters in a clean-up process. This will give them the opportunity to choose what they wish to inherit. The rest will be my job to dispose/sell in the fashion I feel appropriate.

I’ve tried to encourage my own parents to do the same but they will have none of it.
