I am trying to identify this part from under or behind the dash. This will also be my first attempt to embed a picture. The preview worked! The part takes a bulb on the side you can't see.

That's the electronics for the low fuel light.
One of the failure modes of this part is your gas gauge will read almost full all the time on both tanks. Unplug this module and the gas gauge works properly, although you will now not have a warning light. On my GMC this warning light module has been disconnected for years because it failed in this manner.

This is the "low fuel" monitor. In the GMCMH application it does not use the bulb. It senses the fuel gauge level and turns on a warning light when the gauge reads low. There is a hole between the speedo and the instrument cluster on the back side of the dash it clips into.
Note this warning light is only as good as your fuel gauge reading.
