Last summer I fried the water heater when we ran out of water and the heater was left on (noob error!). There is a small aluminum plate bolted to the front of the tank (green wire (ground) attached to it) with what look like the high limit switches on my furnace at home - don't know what it is but I'll bet that it is something along those lines. Obviously generated a lot of heat - element trying to heat and empty tank.
