I'm preparing to replace my rear bogie assemblies in the coming weeks with
assemblies from a newer coach I got from Rick Michelhaugh. An inspection of
these reveals that they are in really good condition--nothing will need to
be replaced.

Except: One of the retainer plate that holds the pins in the frame and
keeps them from turning is broken in half across its mounting screw hole. I
won't be able to salvage one from my old bogies, because they use 1-1/4"
pins and I think the plate will have to be different.

Anybody know where I might find one? Anybody got one lying around?

assemblies in the next few weeks" Denney

Richard,

If it's the little flat lock plate. You can make one, it has no real load to make it of special metal.

Rick,

You're right that you won't be able to use a pin retainer from your 1-1/4"
pins. IIRC, those small pins were prevented from rotating by countersunk
set screws in the periphery of the heads. The plates were introduced with
the 1-1/2" pins.

Send me the pic of the pin and thread as there is a bracket I can give you
that works instead of one on the rear.
All our pins are hardened and so they are durable.
Seen some that were not and did not last.

Jim, I got your message yesterday, but I’ve been slammed with meetings—I
will call when I can make a hole.

Rick “thanks” Denney

John, shims arrived in the mail—THANKS!

And JimK and I finally hooked up—care package from Applied on the way.

To close the loop: A care package arrived from JimK today. In addition to
the retainer, I bought bogie greasers (yes, I could have made them, but I’m
not retired), rear bearing seals (hoping the bearings look as good as they
feel), new bogie pin o-rings and new bogie thrust washers and seals.

And John sent a pile of bogie-frame alignment shims.

So, I’ll have later 1-1/2” bogies, disk brakes, reaction rods, and
tru-tracks in the front bogies. I still need brake pads, plus whatever
becomes apparent on disassembly.
