Some of you will remember this story as I have told it before, but worth
retelling. I took off from San Francisco to LA to delivery my daughter and
her stuff to USC. Unbeknown to me, we had left off the alternator stiffener
after some work. Left early, dropped quickly and hit the road. Quickly
thereafter, I ate the first belt. In the next 400 miles, I had replaced 15
plus belt. My average time to replace was less than 4 minutes. I found the
biggest problem was finding inventory. Bought 6 at one parts store. THEN I
ENGAGED THE BRAIN. Started the gennie which charged the battery which
brought me home without a worry about replacing the belt. That was a 23'1973
Glacier. Still love that coach. Owned by Bob in Las vegas.

This does not surprise me. I had a lot of similar trouble with our 23 until I looked at the parts book and figure out that there was a missing brace. Making a replacement was not easy.
With a 73 23 there is another little snare.
The house battery is next to the alternator and isolator. That means low resistance in that system. That combined with the fact that an 80Amp 21SI that is supposed to be good for 80Amps, can, under the right conditions actually run at closer to 96Amps. Even at only 80, that is 1200+ watts at the 15.5 that the alternator will be doing. That is 1.7 Hp. A single belt is good for about 1.5Hp. You wonder why they squeal some times??

I had good luck on our 2,800 mile trip to Tallahassee with a double sheave on the alternator. Getting belts with the right width is very important. In the old days you could buy matched belt sets so they were the same length. Now the manufacturers just maintain their consistency is fine.
In any event, no squeals and no readjustments, a first for me!
