I have replaced the OEM drum brakes at the intermediate wheels with a disk
brake system from Dave Lenzi (ref. my '78 Royale). 'Also replaced the OEM
front calipers with 80MM calipers and new Performance Friction pads. As a
result, I have surplus parts that I will give to anyone for local pickup
(Tyler, TX). All parts have substantial remaining service life. 'Not
willing, however, to do packing for shipping and then shipping...

If interested, contact me via private email.

I'm not in need of the parts, but am very interested in how the Lenzi brakes are working. I saw the system at the Tucson GMGMHI meet last year, and was quite impressed. Hopefully you and any others who have installed these will be willing to share their impressions on the system. The Stretch needs better brakes & I am trying to decide what to do. I have been in contact with Dave, & would like to find how they have performed in service.

Thanks, John

I had a set of TSM (Streetrod) 4 wheel disk brakes on the rear. Those had four 11” Lincoln rotors and Chevrolet calipers and pads.
They worked much better than the drum brakes they replaced. But, last summer I decided to remove them and put Dave Lenzi’s brake system on my mid axle. I decided to not put any brakes on the rearmost axle. I felt I could always add brakes on the rearmost if I needed them. After installation I took it for a test drive. At the first stop sign I hit the brakes hard while going 25 mph. The front dipped down and if I had not had my seatbelt on I would have mashed into the steering wheel. I’ve never had such good brakes. Some more braking and a short trip into the mountains near me convinced me that I didn’t need any brakes on the rear axle. I will be adding Lenzi’s hydraulic parking brake to the caliper bracket this next spring.

We went to the GMCMI convention in Amana last fall. Going into a town for gasoline an idiot in a small car cut me off and then hit their brakes when I was doing 35 mph. I slammed on my brakes and stopped within 10 feet, about 2 feet from their bumper. With my old brakes I know I would have hit them. My wife’s seatbelt kept her from flying into the windshield. Her first words were “thank God you put on the new brakes!”

My kit went on easily. But recently I installed Lenzi’s kit on Gus Nottberg’s GMC in Loveland CO. We left his drums on the rear to use it’s parking brake. I had a very hard time bleeding his brakes. We even took his new master cylinder off and replaced it with another new one (thanks, Dave). That didn’t help. I still got a lot of bubbles at the rear and couldn’t get braking. I slept on the problem overnight and in the morning I decided to put Teflon tape on the bleeder screws. I also used a vacuum bleeder. That solved the problem. They quickly bled and I immediately finally got good pedal. It turns out that the bleeder screws were quite loose in the calipers and a lot of air leaked through the threads. I didn’t have that problem with my GMC bleeding so the machining of the bleeder screws must vary from batch to batch or the threads in the calipers vary. Gus and I took it for a test drive and he said that it was the best braking he had ever had in all the years that he owned the motorhome. He said he won’t be afraid to drive in the mountains again.

I highly recommend Dave’s kit. Like everything that Dave does, the quality of the machining well is superb and everything goes together nicely with very complete instructions.

I replaced my P30 34mm master cylinder with the GMC original master cylinder because the smaller piston would give more pressure. I did the same for Gus. The volume of the original master cylinder is fine for 80 mm front disks and for Dave’s caliper and drums on the rear.

You also might want to use Dave’s sensitized booster and get an original master cylinder from him. If you get the booster and master cylinder he will set up the pin length before shipping it to you.

John,

'Very pleased. I bought/installed the system, based on the experience of
other technically proficient/DIY owners with it - and Dave's reputation for
" das Beste oder nichts " (the best or nothing).

John, contact Rick Flanagan as he can demo how 6 tires can stop you under
panic stop.
I know there are several including Al Branscombe that feel the coefficient
of fricyltion at only 4 tires at panic stop will avoid sliding at the rear.
We knew this when we were testing back several years back.
Panic stop it at 60 mph and see.

Gentlemen, thanks for the feedback. Good to get info from those who are using that system. Lots to consider. This heavy stretch needs an improvement over what it has. It stops ok... but I do not want to be in a panic stop with it as it is.

Thanks again, John S
