First. Disconnect the battery. If you have no idea when your alternator, or starter were last serviced. I would take both to a local shop that specializes in both. Don't do exchanges at any parts store. YES. They offer lifetime warrantees that you will spend the rest of your life returning them for that warrantee. Both of these items are relatively cheep to service while in your hometown. NOT on the road. And at YOU convenience. Besides. You don't need to carry a spare. As the spare is already installed.
