Jim H. As time goes on. You become more cognizant of how wonderful ever morning is. I'm so fortunate that at 72. I can still do what I did at 35. And YES. Alittle slower. Then still go out and do road racing. Getting older is mandatory. Growing up is optional. Youth is wasted on the young. Bob Dunahugh

Well said, Bob.
Judy CONSTANTLY reminds me that I behave decades younger than my 78
years. BUT, life has a way of jerking me into the 21st century.
Particularly as it relates to health issues. Every time I get the ladder
out and clean out the gutters and blow the leaves off the roof my son just
about goes ballistic. He sees me as old. I only partially agree. But, Don
Prudhome put it into perspective when asked the question, "Do you still
want to drive Funny Cars?". He replies "Hell no, I back out of my driveway
and back over my neighbor's garbage cans, I've got no business behind the
wheel of a 5000 horsepower race car." Somehow makes cockeyed sense.

Jim,

Please stay off the damn roof. It’s simply not worth the risk.

Darn, Sully,

You sound just like my wife! I sure couldn't persuade HER to get up there
the week before my surgery to tar up that leaky metal-to-asphalt roof
seam! :-) (It's only about a 5/12 pitch anyway.)

Just wait, you young whipper-snappers will one day find out that being
"old" is mostly a state of body, not of mind and determination. If you
stop moving, you die.

I’m 52. I work 10+ hrs a day in a body shop welding/pulling/hammering and
cutting. I also love to ride street and off road bikes. I occasionally race
my off-road bike and track ride my 999 Ducati. I will no longer get up on
the high side of my roof for ANY reason. The risk is just too great. I can
(and do) have a guy come clean my gutters. It costs about $175 a whack.

I have seen the high side of your house. I wouldn't get up there either. I
might take a spin on your Ducati though. But, it would be a Sunday morning
canyon crawl. Bright, sunny, early, morning, lots of oxygen in the air.
Before long, you are riding 11 tenths instead of 7. Love it. I know why you
ride.

Jim,

30’ to concrete.

That bike doesn’t crawl. It only allows hard excelleration and
deceleration. It’s miserable around town. Now the Ninja 1000 on the other
hand is a whole different story.

I am quite familiar with high performance street bikes. Worked on RD-350 2
strokes, and Kawasaki triples, both the 500 cc and 750 versions. Honda 750
interceptors and CBX's, too. My son had one of those Hayabusa's and a 4
cylinder BMW. CROTCH ROCKETS, ALL. Love riding them, bad habits and cammy
running at low speed. Slow speed in traffic is no fun at all. But, out in
the sparsely populated areas early in the day, oh baby, that is when I love
to ride.
But, then reality sets in. I no longer have lightning quick reflexes,
and my depth perception ain't what it used to be. My self preservation
instincts now override my foolhardy behaviors (most of the time). But a 30
foot fall will kill a young man just as quick as an old foolish one.

Even if he's an old fart, he'll always be "The Snake"

Yep, only one crazier than Don was Connie Kalitta. One truly insane person.
I made a promise to my wife Mary to stay away from that stuff back in
the 60's. Hard to walk away from all that adrenaline, but I have, so far.

I was involved in drag racing starting with a H gasser ( 300 CI Ford 6) in the middle 60’s with a 60 Ford Falcon body. It ran very well and we took took home a lot of grudge racing money. That’s when I really got addicted and you're right about the adrenaline. We used to say “Drag racing, only sex is better”!

In the 70’s crewed on Grand Spaulding Dodge Top Fueler out of Chicago and Larry Brown’s Top Fuel Chevy out of Dayton, OH that was runner-up to Shirley Muldowny at the 80’s springnats. Because we had moved to Louisiana in 1979 I migrated towards Alcohol cars, both dragster and funny cars. 81 thru 83 I crewed with Bill Mullins TAD with was a blown all aluminum small block chevy and we won a number of divisional and National events. Moved on to Daryle Gwynn TAD and then to his TF car. Needed to cut my travel down got involved the a TAFC ( 6 to 8 races a year ) out of Austin TX called the “Grim Reeper” owned by Larry Reep. Was crew chief until I walked away in mid 1986 and have never been to another race since, it was also a promise to my wife. That has been 32 years, I some times see NHRA on the tube and I still recognize a lot of the crew members and crew chiefs that were starting out when I was racing. I still keep in touch with several past racing friends, But the smell and sounds are addicting!

Excuse my comments!

JR, I know the drill. Mary put it to me this way, "You have a choice, you
can go drag racing, or, you can be married" but you can't spend the
household money on drag racing." Your choice!. I grew up a whole bunch
fairly quickly. Leaving racing was harder than quitting smoking, which was
about that same time in my life.
We had a "C" gasser, a '39 Chev coupe, Small block chev powered. Ran
10.99s all day, around 109.90 mph. Nat record was 10.98 then. Late nights,
no sleep, long tows, the whole deal.
But, a promise is to be kept. Few regrets today.

They're all 'bracket racers' now. I'm like run what you brung, when the tree comes down to green stand on it. First one through the lights goes to the next run, last one goes home till tomorrow. I figure I'm on borrowed time since the late 60s, I'm gonna live it up until that loan is called.
I*'m acrophobic, so my house has no gutters Smile Since I had all the pine trees removed, I may add one on the front.
I sold the last bike in Birmingspam before we moved to Georgia due to the local traffic. Ever time I want another one, some fool gets spattered all down the freeway and it reminds me, I've probably used up all the two - wheel luck I was given. However, when the E P A declares Fridays as 'Two Wheels Only' days, I('m looking for another Suzy Water Buffalo.

Have lunch and dinner at home and still enjoy the race.
Both days of qualifying and all day Sunday.

IMHO well worth the hundred or so annual investment.
If you have the right TV sound system you can ALMOST duplicate the experience though, you'll never replicate the smell/taste of Nitro. Cool

Nah, Commerce is two exits up I 85, Atlanta Dragway scratches my itch for drag racing. When I was working I could get in free. Haven't tried it with a binniss card since I retired. I follow the Broadcaster's Creed - "If you can't scam your way in, don't go. NEVER pay."

While we were rummaging around in my memory banks for the 60's, one thought
surfaced. How much has changed in all motorsports racing since then.
We used to wrench on the race car on Friday after we got off work,
trailer it up, lash it down, hook up the tow car. Run home, shower, grab a
couple of hours shut eye, then up at the butt crack of dawn, hop in the tow
car, and head out for the strip. Sometimes a 6 hour tow, sometimes a whole
bunch more. Most of those strips only exist in pictures and memories today.
Housing developments, agricultural lands, RV Parks and mini storage units.
Had to get the GMC info in.
I remember the first time I saw Big Daddy Garlits at the strip. Old
faded pale blue Dodge truck with an extra cab and a short flatbed box,
towing a very long slingshot with blown Mopar power. White T shirt, pack of
smokes rolled up in one short sleeve. (Never noticed if he ever lit one
up), I was too interested in the rail.
He had a set of rollers that he backed the Dodge truck onto, rolled the
race car on to the rollers to spin the tires and start that hemi. I
remember the sound that thing made. His crew sprayed some gasoline into the
injectors, they spun 'er up and it blocked all other sounds in the pits
when it lit off.
He headed for the staging area with crew members wiping down the tires
as he went.
When he got close to the start line, the sound of that engine changed
to a deafening rolling thunder. Never heard anything like it before or
since. I found out later he was running 98% nitromethane, 2% benzene. If I
tried that, we would have had a smoking pile of crankshaft and rods on the
ground under the car.
And then there was the smell. Made your eyes burn like fire and took
your breath away.

It's worth a stop at Garlitts' museum off I 75 in north Florida. He and Ronnie Sox and JoHn Force and The Ramchargers and a couple or three others wrote the book on how to hustle down a quarter mile. For engine noise though, nothing beats Corky Fornof's modified F8F Bearcat with the corncob round motor when it was making power. My unit used to suply P.A. and where necessary a control tower for airshows around the Southeast. I had the privilege of supplying the mike and stuff for Fornof, Duane and Marion Cole, and the Red Devils at shows for two or three seasons. I learned more just talking to those guys and watching them than anybody ever taught me in a formal training scenario. I figure if Sikorsky could stick a round motor in a helicopter, we ought to be able to put one in a GMC and go for the speed record.

n.b. If you wanna do precise airwork, read Cole's books, Turns About A Point and Conquest Of Lines And Symmetry
