Oldest TZE Owner

Yesterday at Camping World I happen to meet a fellow GMC motorhome enthusiast from Michigan. He claimed to be a retired engineer that actually worked on various stages of the GMC motorhome line and was quite knowledgeable of these old beasts. If he's on here, please drop me a line it was nice to have met you.

Coupled with the information from some of the savvy senior members on this forum and a chance encounter with the aforementioned, I have concluded that I am most likely the owner of the oldest existing TZE GMC motorhome. I came to this conclusion only having exhausted the vast resources available on the internet and a ridiculous amount of time on the phone.

As a collector of classic RVs, this is without a doubt my luckiest find to date. Interest in this vehicle has been phenomenal to say the least. Almost annoyingly. Given this fact, I politely ask that my anonymity be respected. this is not my first vehicle and having a reasonable amount of knowledge of the GMC motorhome, I had a gut feeling that this was in fact something special. Furthermore, please know that I fully understand and appreciate the historical significance of this vehicle and its place in history.

With that said, I will be more than glad to help everyone by providing data and information about this old girl and some of the hidden secrets that I've discovered Smile
I am strongly interested in either having this vehicle professionally refurbished or accepting a trade on an already refurbished coach. Those are just a couple of the ideas I have at this point.

One thing I am sound on is the idea that if I do not refurbish this vehicle and tour it, I believe it should stay within the strong GMC motorhome community. I am dedicated to the preservation and traditions of the clubs.

From Old Post:
Johnny Bridges asked....

"Johnny already apologized for being a bit prickly....
And comes the next question. Are you going for a restoration, or 'restomod' with some of the proven updates fitted to newer coaches? Things like the larget bogie pins which won't be noticeable on a fairly close inspection.

To answer Johnny's question,
Sir, my plans for this coach at present are uncertain but I would strongly consider trading this historically important coach for an updated modernized one. It should be with somebody that has the resources and determination to restore it properly. I think people would really get a charge seeing it at the rallies. Maybe win some awards.

You might post it in Hemmings and/or some of the other 'antique' hobbyist venues. Most of what you'll see in this forum is aimed at upgrading and using, as opposed to restoring to original.

I would be looking for the last coach produced, rather than the first.
Those early coaches were full of warts. The 77 and 78 coaches are refined
compared to them.

To each their own James. I would imagine the interest in this particular coach would be historical. In comparison to my 78 Palm Beach, can't say I have found any "Warts". On the other hand, after 40 something years you would expect previous owners have ironed out all the wrinkles. @ Johnny, appreciate the tip. Had a guy in Germany already hit me up. Anyway, having a lot of fun here with this coach. Been driving it around a lot. Kind of fun comparing all the little differences to my 78. like a kid in a candy store right now.

Mine left the GMC factory as a transmode in March 1968. It was delivered to
a HONDA CAR dealership from Jimmy Industries with 9 miles on the clock in
late May. Not where I can see the exact dates, but I am sure that there
were others later than mine.

I assume that you meant March 1978. My 1978 Palm Beach TZE ends in 100258.
My original upholstery instead of the green plaid decor is white corduroy
material throughout which might mean that it was "thrown in" towards the
end of 1978 production as GMC was out of the usual green plaid material.?

Warts are in the eye of the beholder. For those of us who use the coaches, the early ones' warts are small bogie pins, lousy HVAC, thinner floors, poor door latches, potentially leaky window frames, and several others.
To the classic car/rv buff, these things are important if you have the first one out there and you want to show it as opposed to traveling in it.
History often asks a greater price than utility.
