Yesterday was an enjoyable one. Son Alan & grandson Kenneth came down from
Macon, GA on Thursday evening to spend the night. Yesterday morning we
departed at 0600 EDT for Gainesville. The elder grandson, Dennis, now a
student at GA Tech, was participating in an event at Gainesville Raceway.
Sponsored by Grassroots Motorsports magazine (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grassroots_Motorsports), the students (and
numerous other groups) build cars for less than the number of dollars
enumerated by the calendar year (i.e. $2018 this year). The cars then
compete in Autocross, 1/4 mile Drag, and Concours d'Elegance.
Yesterday at Gainesville was Autocross (run twice because the drag strip
was unavailable for some reason I don't know). Today was to be the
Concours. The "GA Tech Wreck", a 4-door BMW with a Corvette engine and
transmission and custom student-designed front and rear suspensions, did
quite well. Without official final results, they were in 3rd place out of
probably 25 entrants, with high hopes that today's Concours would improve
that.
We'd planned to spend the night in the GMC (which kept us cool throughout
the 90+*F day with its TroyBilt generator) at Frank and Nene Jenkins' place
6 miles from the track. But, when events ended at 7 PM, we decided to make
the 3.5 hr. drive back to Americus instead. The GMC ran flawlessly,
seemingly enjoying not having the "lifeboat" behind it.
Kenneth, who has a several year old Miata and a similar parts car, came
away excited with an idea: He was given a ride in one of the two cars
faster than his brothers, a Miata with Mustang running gear. Now, he's
trying to figure out how to fit his parts Miata with the Cad500 and TH-425
I have, figuring he can stay under budget if I let him have them CHEEP!
:-) Hasn't quite got the configuration designed yet though. I suggested
making it rear-wheel drive and adding a cockpit where the hood is now.
That's not as outrageous as some we saw, like the Corvette with the wooden
"Covered Wagon (including canvas top with hoops)" body. Other ideas? :-)
