John Nicholls and I left Thursday morning for the trip home. We travelled
farther then planned, about 500 miles. Eureka Recreational Area, a Corps
of Engineers campground near Eddyville, KY looked like a good place to
spend the night. But when we got there we found prominent "No Camping"
signs. The area was open, but the sites were all blocked off. Luckily, we
were able to make a U-turn through the dump station, so didn't have to
disconnect the toad to escape.
After considerable riding about and even stopping to ask directions, we
found Hillman Ferry Campground a few miles farther into the Land Between
the Lakes National Recreation Area. A very nice campground with an
exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. Full hookups, but surprisingly
expensive for a COE facility; $40 ($28 with my Senior Park Pass). Other
campers told us we were lucky to be there before Friday because it would be
full for the next two weeks with local families enjoying Spring Break (2
nearby counties with consecutive break weeks).
Another 500 miles on Friday put us at my home in Americus. A bit tired,
but with two drivers, 1000 miles in 2 days wasn't bad. The GMC and its
Cad500 performed flawlessly for the entire trip, though I did add a quart
of oil after about 1600 miles.
John made it on home by car on Saturday morning.
Thanks to Kim and all the MANY helpers for a GREAT rally. As always, we
tremendously enjoyed visiting with our fellow GMC-nuts! :-)
