Hi Dean,
Look at the table in the presentation I gave on how to allow your ONAN to run on either gas or propane at the flip of one toggle switch. That presentation, called Feeding the Barbarian, can be downloaded from GMCMI, Gmc cascades or GMCWS web sites and likely others as well. The table is near the end.
In that table I laid out the consumption for given loads using gas or propane. While gas has more heat content than propane, propane burns far more efficiently so at any given load you will consume about the same number of gallons per hour. Depending on the age, capacity, and state of maintenance, one A/C powered by our ONAN gen sets will consume about one half gallon per hour running on propane or running on unadulterated gas, a bit more running on today’s ethanol laced gas designed for high pressure EFI systems.
All these stats are off if the gas fuel pump, fuel lines or carb are junked up or misadjusted. In those cases the gas consumption will be higher. Since propane burns so cleanly and completely the ONAN will generally start more easily and run more smoothly without hunting on propane. Propane is less expensive in many parts of the country, as well.
Based on my experience the hot ticket is to run on propane as long as you can and switch over to running on gas only when you have too.

Has anyone actually measured how much gas per hr an onan uses running one
A/C?
