| Interesting rear aux AC options on ebay [message #336273] |

As some of you know I am turning a simple rehab of a Birchaven into a life's work...
I have pondering the addition of an aux AC Condenser plugged into the existing vehicle compressor. There are many options out there from existing vendors, but I am not a fan of the aesthetics of an underdash unit, and I was wanting to add some cooling capacity to the back seat passengers. A universal trunk mount from vintage air underneath the bench seat, or perhaps a mens mall rear ac unit, etc.
Then I stumbled across this:

Its only available as a complete kit for $600, but the evaporator is just the right size and shape to fit in between the dinette seats, or on a back wall somewhere.
I have asked the seller if the evaporator could be purchased separately.
Now, mounted at the dinette, the wall unit is fattest at the base, where the body curves inward, so it would eat into some inside passenger legroom...

76 Birchaven - "Wicked Mistress" - New engine, trans, alum radiator, brakes, Sully airbags, fuel lines, seats, adult beverage center... those Coachmen guys were really thinking about us second hand owners by including that beverage center...

Interesting. I've been considering something similar, but planned to mount
under the sofa and run my own ducting. This is a nice alternative that I'll
have to think about.

I'd rather go through you for this kind of stuff, and I have. I had just not seen anything in this configuration listed anywhere.
I was not planning on buying the full kit. Just posting it for discussion.

I bought a under dash unit and am planing some day to mount it where the vacumm is now.
It also has heat so the hoses are in the area for the water heater
.
Anyhow may or may not go that root. I'm in no rush.
1977 Kingsley 455 as stock as it gets except lots of Ragusa parts

Another option is to look at limo HVAC systems.... From my research, most limo's seem to run Manex components in their HVAC...

Eventually, I plan on adding an "MX3+ Heat and Cool" unit mounted under the refrig area for my coach, and ducted up through the area normally reserved for the vacuum to some ball vents located half way up. Here are the specs on the MX3+:
$358.95: MX-3P H-C Gold 3 Speed Blower with Vertical Bezel Plus 20000 BTU's Cooling / 22000 BTU's Heating 550 CFM @ 13.0VDC 15.75" Wide X 13.50" Deep X 5.5" High
I know the A6 will support adding a second aux evaporator... Though unsure if the stock condenser is up to the task... Especially if it the system has been converted to 134a.
For what this is worth, my coach came with an old Leigh Harrison serpentine system when I bought it... It was also converted at that time to run a Sanden SD7 compressor instead of the A6. I was not a fan of the serpentine design, and reverted to the original V-belt system, but retained the SD7 by changing out the clutch to a v-belt part, and modifying the original rigid SD7 mount from the Harrison kit (as the serpentine system had a tensioner) to an adjustable mount to allow the vbelt to be tensioned.
When I add on the rear aux AC unit, I plan to switch over to a "Sanden SD7 Enhanced" for the added capacity (I believe the SD7E supports 42Kbtu, but uses the same case as the standard SD7) and also swap out the condenser for a more efficient parallel flow unit. My current system still runs on R12, and I may consider continuing with this after adding the aux evaporator, as I have an ample supply of R12... Though I may consider one of the HC refrigerants many on this forum support, or perhaps run R152a, as my system has already been converted to ester lubricant when it was set up with the SD7.

The earlier Suburban rear A/C has all the parts you need save longer lines depending where you put it. Check the local men's mall. Be sure to get one off an A6 car so the y pipe fits, or you'll need it made.
I wonder if you could find a pair of evaporators size enough to fit the rear of the seat pedestals, and pull air through them and out the now door with a squirrel cage blower...

I had a '88 company car had it in, I expect all years of that body style. Last one with gutters.
In the 9 pass it was a necessity.
