Had a rear wheel cylinder redone . I thot it was bled but when I picked it
up, the brake light was on. Can one 'reposition' the porportion valve on a
GMC?

Recheck or redo the bleeding procedure. You may have air trapped in the lines.
Does the plunger on the forward side of the proportion valve move? If it is the original iron assembly, it maybe internally rusted stuck.
Was the light on before you bleeded the brake lines? Did you check to see if the wire is still attached to the valve?
Lots of little things to double check.
