Hi GMC2000 (how about a name so we know you at rallies and such?)

FMCA is an organization of some nearly 80,000 motorhomes and now towables as well. It formed as a result of a few bus nuts getting together after WWII. As FMCA grew, clubs formed by owners of different motorhomes petitioned FMCA to become part of that organization. The most saught after member benefit is that FMCA provides umbrella liability coverage for club events. In the 70s GMC ownership grew and specialized GMC clubs formed under the FMCA umbrella. At one time (I think it is still true) GMC was the largest single mark in FMCA. There are larger FMCA club collections today, but they are formed around things like a common chassis (ie: Freightliner) or a holding company name like Monaco (now deceased) rather than a single motorhome model. All clubs that want the FMCA liability coverage and the other member benefits now offered by FMCA, must be clubs where all the club members are also members of FMCA - about $50 per year. Individual clubs could seek their own event liability coverage and not be part of FMCA, but so far most of the GMC clubs have opted to remain affiliated with FMCA.

There is no hierarchy of GMC clubs. All of them are independently formed and managed. Many of us are members of several GMC clubs as well as FMCA and perhaps other RV related organizations. The GMC Forum is independent of any of the GMC clubs and independent of FMCA. Just a bunch of GMC enthusiasts who voluntarily offer our time, support money and knowledge to keep these wonderful old mothorhomes on the road following a successful generational change in ownership.

I did not, this is the first time Ive read any mention of the FMCA, thanks. sort of explains why they (GMCs) dont have an official forum. I see FMCA
does have a forum but nothing specific to GMC or other makes.

interesting part of the GMC history.. wonder how all that developed into what it is today?

Since he doesn't want us using "Fred", "Derf" seems like our only option!

Why do you guys care if you know his name or not?
This childish bullying is tiresome to watch.

Justin,

You're right, in a way; however, during the past 20 years of participation
in this group, unlike most others, I've never seen any "bullying" which
persisted for more than a very few exchanges. There's been almost no
"flaming". That can be largely attributed to the no-tolerance rules of
the host. But the fact that the host has seldom needed to enforce those
rules is, IMHO, due to the fact that we DO mostly use our real names -- we
KNOW each other.

Most of us have never met face-to-face, but we've met here day after day,
yielding almost as close relationships as if we were face-to-face. And many
of us HAVE met face-to-face; thanks to our use of real names, we know it
when we do. This is, after all, a small community; because of the GMC MH,
I've shaken hands with our members from Britain, Holland, Australia, and
everywhere in between. Without knowing their names from here, I might have
missed those opportunities at the various rallies and conventions we've
attended.

Perhaps we do get a few more spam messages than we would without exposing
our names, but I doubt it.

I'm not going to criticize anyone for concealing their real name; but I
will be disappointed.

Wow, I'm on a roll here....
I am agreeing with KenH Again...

But more than that, the reason I steer new people here to build a sigfile like Ken's above is very simple and kind of selfish. Many do not have any idea of the variations that exist in the line. And often (particularly common on FB) someone will ask a question for which the best answer is very coach model specific. (On FB, I will not bother to answer but I may ask what the coach is.)

There are also concerns that are climate sensitive. So, a geographic reference is good. This can also help in that many times here, many have found that an individual that he might assist was in striking range. How Good is That!! A native guide can save a lot of grief.

Then there was a member that signed on with the name Robin Hood. When I explained that we liked real names so as not to feel real stupid when we met, then he responded that his name is really Robin Hood. I didn't feel ill at ease at all when we met at a rally.

No smart alec there. Robin is the real deal. But, the need for providing
for his family led him away from the public pretenders office to the
private sector, and a huge work load along with it. Have not heard from him
in a while, but his escapades with red wasps in his coach are something
else. He is wacky enough to be considered a suitable member of any GMC
organization, but making a living stunts his progress.

If you have watched the Morgan & Morgan ads on television about their Veterans Department, that’s Robin. A good guy!

Sully,

Is this the Robin Hood video you wanted? I found this by searching the
GMCNet Archive Google Group for "Robin Hood".

JMHO,

Ken your right this community is super nice and supportive which is great!
It's just dismaying to see people jumping on this guy just because he doesn't want to give out his name. People have a right to their privacy.
I understand the usefulness of a name and location, but that's a personal choice.

While making up names for someone may not seem like bullying, when multiple people start making jokes at someone else's expense because they are different, that's the definition of bullying.
Calling a guy "derf" because he prefers to not give his name on the interent is no different to me than calling a kid 4 eyes because they wear glasses.

I know no harm was meant, I just felt the need to comment on it before it got out of hand.

Stepping off of soap box now.

I don't see it as bullying, just a gentle bit of poking fun. And since I've worn cheaters from age 3, the appellation 'Foureyes' doesn't bother me atall. If the gentleman finds 'Fred' offensive I'm sure he'll say so.
As to Robin Hood, a hell of a nice guy. Met him and Phipps along I 10 some years ago and gave him the wheels and tyres off my 23' coach so he could get one of his moved. And for the Viet vets (Not era, but been there vets) he told me at one point that anyone who ever set foot in Vietnam in a uniform can and should get disability bennies from the VA... for whom he worked at the time. Given the potential income from the private law firm sector,I expect to see him next in a Diesel Tiffin 45 footer Smile

Justin,

I agree with you that bullying is not a good thing among school children! I have no idea how you would bully an adult, especially a man.

When I was 12 I broke one of my front teeth and from that age onwards I had a stainless steel cap on it. For my four years in high school I was known as "Silvertooth" and I lived through it.

I am a devotee of Friedrich Nietzsche who wrote; "That which does not kill us makes us stronger."

whats in a name? http://gmc.mybirdfeeder.net/GMCforum/index.php?t=msg&th=41036&start=0&rid=5513

was refraining from posting here mostly due to the thread splitting but also the childish behavior of some here but since you mention it..

gang stalking is the correct term for organized harassment. not that Im concerned or intimidated here at all.. seems to be more like childish behavior but you never know.. probably a little bit of both for whatever reason(s)

we will work it out one way or the other, that I AM sure of.

as far as the original topic and title of this thread goes. a couple of new posts in the sandbox about it here http://gmc.mybirdfeeder.net/GMCforum/index.php?t=msg&th=38930&start=0&rid=5513 for the forum challenged among us.

an attorner who goes by the name of Robin Hood? most ironic! dont they all practice with a middle initial? (another name/persona?) its like a trade secret or something.

Im also sure that "That which we call a rose

Now this is funny!

"organized harassment"

Those of us that have requested you provide a name "organized" planned to harass you, NOT!

"childish behavior"

Wanting to know your name is "childish?"

I fully comprehend the reason you're reticent to provide personal information over the Internet, however, I look at it this way, if
someone REALLY wants to find out information about me they can do it without the Internet; the Internet makes it easier.

At any rate I will continue to respond to your queries and help you become familiar with the GMC in hopes that you buy one and go to
a rally or GMCMI convention and I'll get to meet you as from your emails it is apparent that you're a pretty cluey guy.

PS - Robin Hood is his real name, he is helping Veterans get what the deserve from Uncle Sam and from a guy that spent a year in
Viet Nam he's a great guy. I helped him when he lived in Mississippi get one of his GMC's ready to move to a new storage location.
Tom Phipps helped as well.

I agree with you, Justin.

If a person doesn’t want to use their real name - use the name/handle/email the poster wants to use. Pretty simple stuff and no name calling required...
