This seems like a dumb question but after several attempts at cleaning the windshield, I thought I'd ask the guys who've been doing it for a while. When cleaning the windshield at a gas station, there doesn't seem to be any way to squeegee the window dry without leaving a bunch of streaks due to the curves of the windshield. How do you guys deal with this?

Thanks,

I hope you are ready for this answer.....

0000 Steel wool

When we are traveling, I will start the day by cleaning the windshield first with a blade scraper to get the big bugs off, then I change to the steel wool. This is a trick I picked up from a commercial show detailer. It really works well, and does not take too long and certainly no longer than all the wet processes.

I also have a brush and squeegee on real long extendable pole that I might use if we pick up a lot of road dirt and such as it can be faster to do this. The streaks are a given.

I like brass for glass.

According to the manufacturer.
"Magic Wool Hand Pads are great for restoring, maintaining & finishing all wood, metal & glass surfaces. This custom blended pad is made from a high grade bronze metallic wool. Similar to a steel wool but ultra fine and RUST Resistant. This Magic Wool hand pad along with Shurhold's Buff Magic is the perfect combination for removing water spots from glass."

If it’s steel wool and you are using it on glass and chrome 0000 is the
coursest you can use without worry.

I spent a trip from NS to NM with another couple and the guy, older than
myself, spent every morning with a roll of paper towel and a bottle of
Windex scrubbing away at his windshield. They were not driving a GMC. Every
gas stop or driving break...same thing. "Bob" said he only needed glasses
for reading small print. My Donkey!!

He missed exits on a regular basis and when the 4 of us went to a
restaurant it became a comedy of 'glasses, glasses, who can lend me their
glasses'? The man could not see! He just wouldn't wear glasses because he
didn't need them. Ludicrous ! Whether he was wearing glasses or not, his
good looks couldn't be spoiled; he didn't have any !

I'm not saying anyone on here is like "Bob", but who said you don't need
glasses

Back to cleaning...I do it every 3000 miles or less if not necessary.

its usually the nasty old 'cleaning fluid' that causes streaks.

carry a good spray bottle that sprays a stream and your own squeegee.. problem solved.

Ive seen people washing their cars out of those free windshield cleaning buckets.

this thread reminds me. I do look forward to seeing how the rain dances off a GMC windshield at differing speeds and such with a good coat of rain-x on it. I dont drive anything without it.

There is another good product to try called Aquapel, made by PPG. You can get it on eBay. It works the same as RainX, but lasts about a year. I have used it before and it works quite well.

Silicone wipers are supposed to do the same, but I haven’t tried those yet.

to remove squeegee marks I wipe dry with a paper towel. I stand on the bumper and it gets nice and clean.
Also +1 on Rain-x, great stuff and makes the bugs not stick so well.

I need to find that brass wool, sounds great

For the drying portion of the windshield chore, I use microfiber cloths. Work very weii and can be washed in normal dirty clothes fashion. Also work great on the inside of the windows.

Mike,

That's not a dumb question at all. We've got these big beautiful panoramic windshields and of course we all want them to be so clear and clean that they disappear.

Generally I just use a damp very fine microfiber cloth. I keep it folded in a Ziploc bag so it stays damp, and I get three or four cleanings out of it before it needs cleaning. Cleaning consists of rinsing it out with a little soap and winging it out well. On special occasions I treat it to a spin in the washing machine (no fabric softener or bleach)

As far as glass cleaner sprays, Sprayway makes a great product. First time I saw it being used was at a Nor'easter's rally and the guy was cleaning his windshield on a hot day in direct sun and getting a great result totally streak-free.
