Does anyone who was at the Tucson GMCMI/GMCWS convention remember the name of the gentleman who put on the FiTech seminar? I would like to talk to him about my Fuel Command Center.

Hi John,
I did talk to Jason about the FCC. The second generation does not have a float valve and requires a fuel return line to the tanks. I have had the float valve stick four times causing fuel starvation, last three times I just tapped the FCC with a hammer and freed the valve. I have since removed the float valve from the FCC and plumbed a return line to the tanks. I suspect this will solve the problem with the FCC.

I have the original 40003 Fuel Command Center. I installed the Fitech EFI body and programmed it using Randy's settings and was impressed with how much of an improvement it made in starting and takeoff when the engine was cold.
I set off on my first trip to a GMC rally and about 10 miles from home, I started slowing to a stop. After a brief stop, things seemed OK and I set off again only to have the cycle repeat. (I'm thinking vapor lock) The outside temperature wasn't much above normal -- definitely not hot.
I called Fitech tech support and they had me remove the FCC and check that the float valve wasn't clogged. It was clean and the float was not binding. I went on Youtube and found that others had this problem, it was vapor lock, and they solved it by removing the float and allowing gas to circulate through the FCC and back to the tank. I made that mod and my next trip went without a hitch.
So, I decided to call Fitech and see if I could get the replacement FCC, the 40004, as a warranty exchange. What became apparent is that Fitech wasn't anxious to either admit a problem or make the change. Their Master Tech started questioning my setup, which is exactly what their documentation requires. I persisted and he finally referred me to customer service. The two reps I ended talking with seemed to know nothing of what happened at the Tuscon rally, or admit knowing of any problems with the 40003. Finally after some off-line consultation, the agreed to issue me an RMA for return. The new 40004's weren't in stock and I would have to send in the 40003 first to get an exchange. So I decided to wait at least until they were in stock.
If you go to the Fitech website, you'll now find that the original 40003 FCC is no longer even listed and only the new 40004 is available. The 40004 now boasts of no float valve. Does this tell you something?
Anyway, I took a more detailed look at the 40004 FCC and how it should be mounted. Clearly it is entirely different from the mounting on the 40003 and the mount that I fabricated for the 40003 would be useless. So, since the 40004 does exactly what my modified 40003 does by removing the float valve and allowing gas to recirculate to the gas tank I'm not sure it's worth the effort to replace it. I'm still thinking.

Since I have a California 78, I must make it easy to reconfigure if necessary, for a smog test, so I am still in the planning stages of installing my system, & do remember that "promise" to exchange the unit. In fact, what I think I heard him say is that if you have one not yet installed, it would be exchanged. My plan was to call and try to get that done before I install, so maybe I wouldn't have to go thru all the grief others had. In light of Jack's phone experiences, maybe I do need Jason's number!
I am also wondering if, since we need to provide a return line from a floatless FCC, what is the advantage to having the FCC? I am considering just mounting a high pressure pump near the tanks, plumbing a return line, and avoiding the addition of another point of failure.
