Mike,
I can think of no good reason to haul around a heavy autotransformer.
They're good for controlling extremely erratic and noisy power sources --
like I haven't encountered during the past 60+ years of RVing.

Back when I was working I had a number of these transformers as part of power supplies providing -48 vdc. They provided mediocre regulation, but what I remember most is that they were electrically noisy.
