Someone I know bought a 78 with BIG rust holes in the backing plates. And big chunks of the brake drums gone due to extreme rust. I have the four off my 73. Bob Dunahugh

Bob,

You are sure to love this answer.....
Maybe.
There was a recall. GM sent dealers loaded backing plates to put on 73, 74, and some 75 coaches (as nearly as I have been able to determine).
This was along with a rear spindle upgrade.

So, if that 73 got the upgrade, then they should be interchangeable.
Someplace in the files of GMC data is a discussion of this upgrade. I believe it can be identified by looking at the external face of the brake drums.
