G'day,
Shopping for a new interior kit for the '67 Beetle I bought to use as a towd and ran across this on the Samba VW site:
"POs, you gotta love them, because killing them is illegal."

Years ago on the Lotus Esprit list they always used the term ‘DPO’. I asked and was told it was short for ‘Dreaded Previous Owner’. When I asked if there were any previous owners who weren’t dreaded, comparisons to Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster started... one may possibly out there, but never confirmed by science.

I always heard them referred to as "IPO"s: "Idiot Previous Owners" Of course not only owners fall in that class. Years ago when I worked in a small foreign car shop, we used to recite the Ancient Indian Proverb: "Last brave who worked on covered wagon was idiot!" And related, from my days in the Citroen Car Club, "At some point in the car's life, a gorilla with Whitworth spanners has had it to pieces." Of course, back in New England we learned that nearly all hardware is made of an alloy called "Tite Corrodium", but the critical parts are made of "Unnobtanium".

Well, I must be an outlier. I refer to my previous owner as Beloved Previous Owner for all the upgrades he (?) lavished on the coach. Better gearing, Ragusa everything, fantastic fan, true-track's, the list goes on.

I will not say that everything I bought used was well maintained, and this is a fact that I was glad for at one time in my life. While in college, I managed to earn some additional capitol buying and selling carefully chosen cars. Many were running very poorly, and the owner had already poured in all the money he though it was worth. There were occasions that I had the subject vehicle running right before I got it back to campus. British with Lucas ignition were always a good bet.
Our coach, we know as Chaumière, is not one of these. It was pure chance that we found her when the then owner was interesting in parting with her. She came with all the books, documentation and a quantity of important spares. In her prior life, she had been loved and cared for. Yes, I had to replace the furnace, and I have managed a good number of upgrades, but this is the second time she has been down and this was my call. She has been on a "hook" once. For 12 good years and a little less 70K, I'll take it.
So I, for one, cannot think poorly of Chaumière's PO.

The lord takes care of drunks and crazy people. I bought the coach Mike Briere now has unseen off ebay. Wearing 12 year old 16.5s on steel wheels. With an unbuilt carb, fitted filters. Drove it home from Brasenton with a bud following in Paula's van with tools. Never missed a lick, purred all the way. It had new fuel lines.

It was nice to get a small stack of out of order receipts when I bought my coach. Some from my 77, others from a 73 that the Prior, Prior Owner, PPO had. Only downside was it was the PPO before the PO that spent some coin with Buskirk and other shops for the maintenance which was a good 5 years before I bought in. The upside to the down side is the PO did not cobble too much together for me to un-cobble. I would have NEVER known it had 3.55 final drive without the paperwork...
Alas, now someone can curse me in 30 years when they get the phone book of receipts, and the spreadsheet, and log of what was done, when it was done, what mileage, where I got the parts, how much I paid. etc.
