Many of you will remember fondly Ed Whitson of Sulphur, LA. While John
Nicholls and I were near there on the way to Tucson, I tried to reach him,
although I knew he'd moved closer to his family. That attempt put me in
touch with his youngest daughter, Alice Regan. With her permission, here
are excerpts from her messages, GMC technical or not:

Thank you SO MUCH for reaching out to him. He always spoke SO WONDERFULLY
about his "GMC Friends"!!! Thank you for being dear friends of his and
thinking about him.
I am so very sorry to report that my father passed away on 12-24-17. He was
at his home surrounded by family and a TREMENDOUS amount of love.
Ed fell in October 2017 while trying to make coffee and juggle the
newspaper and his walker. His hand was stuck in the brand new box of his
favorite coffee pods he had just received from Amazon. Of course(!) he had
to make a joke of the fact that he could get his hand inside the box, but
could not get his hand out with his favorite coffee.
He was living alone (my idol) and very independent. My sister found him
about 3 hours later on the tile floor of his pantry. My sister, Pris lived
across the street and checked on him every day at lunch. Ed told her to
call for help. EMS took him to ER. He had broken his clavicle and his back.
He spent 3 days in that hospital, then was transferred to another hospital
for rehab. He did REALLY WELL, until he developed klebsiella pneumonia. He
was in isolation for 2 weeks. He fought like the champ he was, but his
heart and lungs just could not keep up. At 94 years old, he finally lost
the biggest FIGHT of his life.

I think my father would want all of his GMC friends to be aware of his
death. He was so fond of each of you. That GMC motor home kept him young!
The memories of his adventures with his lovely bride traveling the
countryside fulfilled his dream of retirement.
I’m not sure if you are aware, but he traveled to France for his 85th
birthday! What a guy!!
He was sharp as a tack until his last days (always could tell you how the
stock market was doing) and was still driving. He lived a very long and
wonderful life. He fought for our country at the age of 19. He was my
hero. I pray that I am blessed with his genes and can one day enjoy my
retirement as much as he did.
