I change mine every few years. Yes. I'm doing mine more then needed. But I like to just see what metal is in the lube. As there is no filter in the FD. At this change. I saw some metal that concerned me in the gear lube. So I pulled the FD so I could check the pinion bearing race that's next to the transmission. As if that bearing fails. You can seriously damage the transmission. The bearing race showed it's age. But usable. So this time. ( Been on the ROUND TO IT list for years ) I put a magnetic drain plug in the bottom of the FD cover. This will do a few things for me. Will make removing the cover simpler by getting the lube out first. Can get any metal out of the lube while driving. How I can see what metal WAS in the lube by just pulling the magnetic plug out. So now I don't have to pull the FD cover off as often.
Got the magnetic drain plug at Auto Zone. A jam nut at Ace hardware. ( It's a thinner nut.) Drilled a 1/2" hole in the bottom of the cover. Then tack welded the nut in two places on the inside. By holding the nut in place with a standard bolt. Then put the magnetic plug in. I always add a small O ring around any drain plug in addition to the normal drain plug plastic washer. Owner of a very dependable 78 Royale. DUE to over maintaining our Magic Carpet GMC. Oils are CHEEP. FD's, and transmissions aren't. Bob Bob Dunahugh
