Today we drove from Lake Tahoe towards Las Vegas - no real destination
just wanted to drive a long and stop wherever a campground stood out. It
came different.
We talk a route with very little gas stations. I now know, that the Low
Gas light works. Switched to Aux tank and it was 61mls to go to Tonopah,
NV. Due to a small stop due to road work, we made it around 60,8mls.
0,2mls in front of the gas station we broke down. I ran to the gas
station, bought a container and a gallon of gas, went back, but no
success. did want to start. Try switching between aux and main, but no go.
Send my girls to get another gallon while I tried a bit more. All of a
sudden a local sherriff's car came by, and asked why I was still on the
road and if I need to get a tow. We came into a dialoge, and he was very
helpful. Girls came, we poured another gallon in, still no go. Tried
with pouring directly into the carb, it worked a bit, but there wasn't
enough. Of they went to get a third gallon, all the while the sheriff
stood by my side, kept his car behind me to make sure nobody would
bother me. VERY helpful.
In the end, a Gatorade bottle with gas and sport cap, plus the hand of
my daughter helped to get it going. A second sheriff came by and
escorted at to the gas station on our back and made sure things were okay.
In the end the gatorade was just needed to give a bit more pull to the
fuel pump (at least that's my guess), and even without the gatorade
nursing the engine, things ran. Of course, no pump was free and we had
to cross the street to the gas station. In the end, some 34-35gal of gas
went into the tank before it dripped out in the front. We will stay the
night here, and will try to add some more gas in the morning to see, if
it will accept some more. If not, I am a bit puzzled as to what happens
with my tanks.

Ah, the fun of traveling rural Nevada. Highway 95 southbound.
You are in the county seat of Nye county. Population around 2500 or so. You are correct to leave there full of gas. If you go east on US 6 it is around 160 or 170 miles to the next gas station near Ely. There is not much out there to see. A few miles out there is a turn off to a military base that you are not suppose to know about even though they conveniently put it on the aviation maps. There are a couple of road intersections and a rest area where there are signs saying not to drink the water. There is a turn off to go to Rachel on extraterrestrial highway near area 51. The gas station in Rachel is closed. You will not get close enough to Area 51 to see anything other than wide open desert.
Enjoy your trip and don't bother with US 6 eastbound.

For what ever reason, this last time i pulled the tanks, we pumped
Them dry, and that took almost every bit of gas out.
When we went to refill- the first 5 gallons did not get it to go, so I tried another 5. She then fired up.
The gas really can foam/ aerate, you should easily get
More gas in there once it settles down.
Thanks for the stories. I have an idea for a back emergency fuel supply now i might put in the coach.

Peer,
I've given out of gas in the GMC more times than I'm about to admit --
'tho' SHE's GLAD to remind me of every one of them. Especially the last
one, during our 2013 trip to the west coast. Somewhere on the way home we
were on a long desolate stretch when I found a closed service station. We
gave out about 5 miles from the next open station. After much persuasion,
SHE pushed me with the CRV. Worked out well, but SHE swears SHE'll NEVER
do it again. :-(

that's what I usually do. My *usual* gas intake is between 20 and 25gal
- But I didn't want to spend over 4 USD on a gal of gas. And we got an
adventure out of it :-D

This is probably due to the common fill tube design - some of the fuel that you added would have gone into the first (aux) tank and some into the rear main tank - resulting in neither tank having enough inventory to cover the pickup socks.
I manage GMC fuel as I do when flying an airplane - never ever trust the gauges - fill based on mileage and be very conservative. Many small aircraft have notoriously inaccurate gauges and the only FAA requirement for them is that they read accurately when the tanks are empty. The GMC gauges are just about as bad.

I usually read "out of gas" stories with a bit of interest. But, I
personally don't drive any vehicle on the bottom half of the gage. If you
start out with 50 gallons of fuel in a GMC, and drive until the gage reads
1/2, pull into the nearest major brand station and fill it up. You will
never have to be the author of one of these tales.

When the socks are not submerged and you are on the SIDE of road, adding less than 5 gallons is a bit like the short rain shower where it is still perfectly dry under the trees. That slight tilt with flat tanks means you are still dry on the socks. AMHIK. Now the less than 50 refill puzzle is a separate issue. If she takes more today I would look at venting.

Peer,
I use a phone App (or a computer website) called GasBuddy. It will show you the gas prices in the area you are driving in, plus it has a map function. You can plan your stops more easily that way. At worst, you can just buy a small quantity of gas at higher prices to get you to the lower priced gas.
I have been surprised at how much gas prices vary from place to place. On a trip between Salt Lake City and Las Vegas one time, we found, through GasBuddy, that the gas at Costco in St George, UT was about 68 cents lower than anywhere else. Also, there was a station in White Mesa, UT that as 20 cents less than anywhere within 100 miles of it.

but just drips near the back of the front tire. That's always my sign to

Stop for break every 2 or 2.5 hours to stay fresh. Put 20 to 25 gallons in every other stop. That's what we did when motorcycle touring.

If it's on the passenger side it's probably coming out of the carbon canister which means the triangular shaped liquid-vapor
separator mounted in the driver side rear wheel well is not working properly.

when Low Gas lights up, how much gas is left in the main tank? I did put
the switch to Aux Tank when it light up, and from then on drove another
~60mls

When you run the tanks down too low that the light comes on switch to the other tank then keep switching to the other tank till the light is lit period and hope you make it to a gas station in time. Also pray you don't have a grade to climb. If you drop the tanks to replace hoses remove the socks and extend the pickups lower and add a large external fuel filter from each tank to take the place of the socks this way you will have more fuel if you need it in a pinch. Better yet keep the tanks fuller when traveling in Nevada.

G'day,
Ken Frey installed a filter in the rubber hose that connects the solid line welded to the front crossmember and the mechanical fuel
pump inlet. Its a terrific idea as it keeps crap from getting into the Q-jet filter which is small and is installed "backwards"
vis-a-vis the way it should be installed. Filters should be installed so the flow goes from the outside to the inside; a larger
surface area to a smaller surface area.
