First off I want to thank everyone who replied to the post and offered many things to try to pin down the problem of the starter staying engaged until connector was pulled off of the start solenoid.
It seemed like the 8VDC must have been coming from the control side to hold to keep the starter engaged. Matt posted something about the starter having two contacts in the solenoid, a low current one that engaged the high power one. Well I took the solenoid apart and the plunger in the solenoid was really cruded up. I cleaned it up and put it back on the Onan and it seems to have cleared up the problem. As and extra bonus I now have all connections cleaned including battery cables. THANKS AGAIN TO ALL !
