An old, old joke. I first heard it as an Aggie joke where the town was
Mexia, Texas (halfway from College Station to Dallas) and the restaurant
was Daaaaiiiiireeee Queeeeen.

How did Mexia, which would be pronounced meh-hee-uh in Spanish become muh-hay-uh?

Standard Texas gringo-mouth--the same that makes "Manchaca" sound like
"man-chack" and "Llano"--"yah-no"--sound like "land-o" without the "d".

Try the Southeast for fun pronunciation: all-BENNY (Albany GA) HOUSE-ton (Houston County GA) say-REE (Sayre AL) A-rab (Arab AL) are the ones which come to mind immediately. There are way more.
