Hi all
I'm interested getting a full body paint job on my rig; remove and reinstall the awnings, redo the roof seals, install the roof visor, maybe install the large side windows- whole shebang outside. And, maybe have the captain chairs, two inside chairs and large cushions for the couches re-upholstered.
Existing paint job is a 10 footer, the awnings weren't removed, plenty of overspray. Not awful just not as good as it could be.
Is there anyone in the northeast who can do this? Preferably 200-300 miles from me in southern VT?
Jim Bounds is 1300 miles away
Cinnabar is 625 miles away (through canada)
I'm assuming this is $10-15k depending on my add ons and "we need to address this". Is that a reasonable expectation of cost?

There are a lot of variables to play with, and I am by no means an expert. Ive read 10-15K is in the ballpark if you can find a shop thats interested and has a large enough booth.
One color, or two, or multiple colors and stripes. Single stage, or base coat / clear coat.
How much are you comfortable spending on a gallon of paint? 100 a gallon or 600+ a gallon. Metallic, pearl, solid.
Im pretty sure some folks on here are professional painters. Jim B has documented a few of his techniques and those are nice as well.
I painted my coach this spring, so my costs are vastly different, but I clocked in a good 90+ hours just in the prep work before I opened a can of paint. Thankfully I did not have roof damage, or any leaks when I started so that was a bonus.
I probably spent 15 hours just cleaning, scrubbing and removing old sealers before I actually started "prep" work.
It may be worth going to paint shop locally and seeing if they can fix or address your concerns via buffing/cleaning prior to a full blown paint job. That is unless you cant stand the color.

I just had mine painted (in illionis) and the cost was 11K which was the family discount price. Real cost should have been pushing 20.
That was to take every speck of paint off down to bare metal and start fresh. If your paint is in good shape already then it will be closer to 8-10 realistic price.

Kelly, QUALITY paint jobs, including normal amount of prep, removing lights
and moldings and trim, but, not entire paint removal, one or two colors,
will start around $ 10,000.00. Fancy work will run the cost up from there.

That's what I want, take all the parts off it and then sand it. I didn't think all the paint needed to come off.

Kelly, it depends on the condition of the paint. Mine looked okay from a distance but once we started sanding we found pinholes and solvent pop everywhere and would never have been able to get a good paint job over it. S
If your paint job is in better shape then you just have to thoroughly clean and scuff the factory paint to bond to the new.

My coach was a patchwork of different shades of white. Basic underneath was the original factory paint. That factory paint is tough stuff and I see no reason it should be cleaned down to bare metal. It was prepared and painted by Topeka Graphics in Topeka Indiana. Done in 2011 and rarely stored under cover, it has held up well and still looks good up close. A couple of suggestions...If you are adding a visor, ask them to paint the underside of the visor black. If in a light color, at night, it will reflect the light coming from the forward running lights and can be quite distracting. In addition, the visor needs to be Glued and mechanically fastened. If not, forward travel with a strong head wind will in time loosen it. I had the black belt line painted white, but have found that paint is now coming off in some spots. Make sure that you get colors and formulas of the paint used. Eventually something is going to have to be touched up or maybe a "T" skirt replaced, or a hot water heater replaced and cover needs to be painted. It will make things easier to get a rattle can that matches.

Based on what people are paying now, the price at Topeka was a steal. Unfortunately, word is that they are no longer doing GMC's....but might be worth asking. JWID
Oh...and one more thing. I think Jimmy K said it best when he recommends paint it as if you are gong to sell it.

As usual, these are all great suggestions/ posts. I'm pipe dreaming right now, but may make it a reality in a year or two. Thank you for the tips on the visor, it completely makes sense.
I got myself polish compound, and a wheel to see what I can do with serious buffing and waxing. The colors are fine, it's just chippy in spots, the fridge vent cover was painted with the wrong colors; really nothing big; but dreaming. It's hard to not dream when looking at some seriously lovely paint jobs/designs.

If the paint is not adhering properly to the substrate or is failing by
microfracturing commonly known as checking or crows feet it Needs to be
removed. Otherwise it can be abraded for adhesion and top coated.
