Pertronics and Onan8h [message #320348]

A general question for the brain trust. Is the sole purpose of the Pertronix mod for the Onan just a replacement for the points system?
Or, did I miss something in the years of reading about it's success.

Once the flywheel is modified with the addition of the magnet, and the
pickup coil bracket is mounted, the ignition timing will not change from
that setting.
With ignition points, the ignition timing will change as the points
plunger wears. Not a good thing.

Unless you remove and then re-fit the fan shroud and its mounting plate. Then if you don't check the clearance between the pickup
and the magnet the flywheel can hot the pickup. Yep, been there, done that!

Funny you should ask...
I was just about to write another note to a friend about this.

Mine is a BF (4.0) but mechanically similar to the larger NH (6.0) units. It was a bear to keep the ignition timing right. If you set it with a timing light and turned around, it would have moved and sometimes it didn't wait for you to stop watching.

It was basically an unstable system. The fact that the points wear is the least of the issues.

It is also unfortunate that the system is basically weak. The conversion to Pertronix does not actually help this at all.

I put in the Gary Bovee pertronix set up from JimK, my 6K ran fine before the pertronix, the upgrade was well worth the money to me. Just my opinion and we all know about opinions. Just the overall running and smoothness and sound improved. And don't have to worry about corroded points in Florida and on mine the points were not friendly to get to.
