Last fall I was hunting the wrecking yard and found a couple of Lumina/Transport vans with wipers. I thought that sometime in the future I would look into the electric wiper conversion. After a lot of prying, the wipers finally came off. Today, I thought I would try them on Elvis and to my surprise the “new” wiper bolt holes were quite a bit bigger than the stock wiper ones. They don’t seem to work at all on the stock nubs. They just spin around. What am I missing here? Are there some other pieces that I need or???

Neil,

You must remove the knurled nut from the GMC wiper shaft. Then ream the
Lumina wiper arm (some sizes of step drill bits -- "Unibits" -- are
suitable) to fit the GMC knurled nut. Leave the nut just a little proud
(1/32"-1/16") of the back of the Lumina arm. Now temporarily position the
knurled nut and the arm on the GMC and determine the correct relationship
of the arm to the nut. Keeping that orientation, put the arm and nut into
a smooth-jawed vice and squeeze the nut into the arm so that the knurled
ridges form mating creases in the arm. Now you can permanently mount the
nut&arm on the GMC. You'll need a SS washer or two between the arm and the
securing cap nut.

Hope you got the wiper motor and connector pigtail too. Let me know when
you're ready for the electric kit. :-)

My guess would be that when you removed your original arms, you also removed
the tapered adapters thereon. If you retrieve them,
you will then need to ream the Lumina arms with a tapered reamer to install
them. JWID

Thanks for the replies. I will take a closer look tomorrow at what happened. I’m thinking the tapered adapters did stay on the old wipers. BTW, how do you ever get the electric motor out? On the van I looked at (motor still in) I could barely see the wiper motor let alone reach it from the front. Is it easier to remove the dash from inside to get at it? If the van did not still have the motor in it, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad!

Neil,

If you'll go to the web site in my signature block, one of the appendices
of the the installation manual is detailed motor removal instructions.

On some of them it's necessary to remove the nuts around the arm pivots to
release the whole tube assembly that holds the motor under the fiberglass
body. Most only require removing the 3 motor mounting screws to allow it
to be manipulated into a place to disconnect the wiring and linkage. Be
sure to get the motor connector and at least a foot or so of wires.

When chasing down Lumina wiper motors, GM used Torx screws to secure the motor to the frame. T-27 should be the correct size. Screws are weathered in place, bring leverage. As Ken stated, get the attached pigtail with as much attached wire harness possible.
Lumina arms can be used with the hydraulic wipers also. A little elbow grease and spray paint, they also look good.

Please note the size correction. Went outside and measured, instead of Senior memory.
