Hi Every1,

I just like to start with saying thank you for thsi great forum and community that all you GMCers have build over the years.

As a newbie I find so much info on the forms and other sites that it makes me really nervous since I bough on of these beauties Smile So much that seems to go bad by old age over time.

Anyway ... I would like to know if I can run the Onan generator without being hooked up into the Main Coach connector. OR ... Can I start & Run the Onan when I am connected via Wall AC to my coach system?

I hear some1 say never run it without a load, but I would like to check. Reason why.. I am having some issues with my batteries for the Coach system, which I try to solve, but in the meanwhile I that It would be good to have the Onan run every once in awhile. It has been a while (2 months or so).....

Thanks in advance for all your responses, if I get any Smile

The Onan feeds the 14-50 Receptacle, and the coach's14-50 Plug and cord can plug into that or into shore power. It does not hurt the Onan in any way shape or form to run with no load. When exercise running the Onan it is slightly better to start, warm up, run with a load such as roof AC, remove the load, let it run a couple mins to shed excess heat, then shut down. This proves it really works and the load helps heat the oil to remove moisture.

Yes, it can be run without a load. In fact, that is how you usually turn one up and set the no load voltage (which is directly related to the RPM and frequency)..
It should cause no harm.

I hear some1 say never run it without a load, but I would like to check. ...

First, as John said, the only downside to running it under no load is getting it up to temperature to drive any condensated water out of the oil. It will warm up more and faster under load.

But it shouldn't hurt to run it a few times with no load on it.

Second, the best way to run the Onan while making sure it is not connected to the house systems is to turn the Onan AC breaker off. It is on top of it towards the back. No matter what a PO might have done to replace the OEM process of using the 50A plug as a "changeover switch", turning the breaker off should separate the Onan from the world.
