I have removed my driver-side roof rail cap and cleaned all the old sealer from the cap and rail area.
After looking at a few instructional pics and videos online, I am still not sure where the sealer goes. They all seem to have missed showing the sealer in place before reinstalling the rail cap.
Here is what I have done:
Removed and cleaned cap and rail
Drilled and tapped screw holes for the new 8-24 X 1" SS screws.
Ran a strip of 3/4" x 1/8" butyl just below the groove, covering the sidewall laminate edge.
Ran another strip of the same butyl just above the groove covering the roof laminate edge, and slightly overlapping the lower butyl strip.
Right now, the cap doesn't seat fully -- and I am not sure the sealer is in the right place. Also, a few of screws are not getting a very good bite.
So, I am thinking of moving the rail forward about 1/4" and redrilling and tapping the holes.
This is a bit of work, so it work be great if I didn't mess it up!
Please advise:
Where does the sealer go?
Are "tight" threads critical?
Thank you for any help you can offer!
