We are preparing our coach for painting this spring and I need to remove the Zip Dee awning. I assume I have to unload the spring before removal of the entire awning and metal cover attached to the top of the coach but if there is a way to remove it intact that would be great.

Yes, you need to unwind the spring. It has about 10 turns of preload. Only
one end is attached to the spring. The other end is just a short axle. I
deploy the awning to parade position or far enough that the end support arm
when disassembled from the bottom of the coach can be separated from the
upper solid bar. DO NOT UNBOLT THE END PIECE UNTIL THE SPRING IS UNWOUND.
YOU CAN BE INJURED IF YOU DO. IF you want specific instructions on how to
do this, contact Zip-Dee or Applied GMC.
If the awning has been in place for a long time, the dirt and crud in the
aluminum cover will make removal a difficult task. Be sure to scrub and
rinse the cover and the roof rail. On 26 foot coaches, the clearance light
on the passenger side rear might present a problem when you go to remove
the awning assembly from the coach. Proceed carefully and wear protective
gloves.

I am sending the Zipdee instructions for installing it to the GMC. You can easily tell how to uninstall it by reading the instructions.

Thanks to all that replied. With this kind of help, it makes owning a GMC easier and in this case, less dangerous.
