I have a 76 Birchhaven and am rebuilding my transmission.

I would like to locate a Caspro or Manny power drive sprocket and chain, new or in good used condition.

Don't, use the power drive, it's an old solution. Get Jim K's 3.70.

Its a better solution as it lowers the load on the transmission.

I have run the Jim K final drives (3.55) and the Manny power drive with a 3.21 final. Both have run without problems. If Manny had any issues with them he would not sell them.

Keith et al,

This subject has come up many times and to date I have never read, heard, or
seen any information that documents problems with the powerdrive.

Last year when I spent a few days at Manny & Deo's I discussed the
reliability of the Power Drive with him and he advised as far as he could
remember he's only had one transmission that had a problem out of the
hundreds he and Caspro sold.

If anyone has any information to the contrary I'd live to "hear" it.

From personal experience, you don't just change chain and sprockets. You
have to change the plate with the chain and sprockets mounted. I did the
chain/ sprockets exchange, then made visit to Manny's. The transmission
over heated and crashed.

Rob et al.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply it would fail, destroy your transmission and neuter your dog.

Just that _I think_ it's a better solution to just put in a 3.70 ( or higher ) and be done with it

I see it the same way as Kieth. Given the choice of spending money on the Power Drive and also on a 3.21 or 3.55 final, I'll go for the 3.70 final (or just a 3.55). Why put more torque though the transmission and its clutch packs? Let the tranny spin a bit faster with less torque on it and have the final drive up the torque to the wheels?

Just my farmboy mechanic way of looking at it.

Terry,
Could you explain, please. Do you mean there is a good way and a bad way to put in the power drive from Manny? What plate do you have to change?
Thanks

We have lot of people going with the 3.70 with the LSD (Limited Slip
Differential) option.

Thanks to all for your input! Enjoyed reading all the comments. I have the necessary kit coming from Manny now.

I have decided to stick with the power drive since I am rebuilding a switch pitch transmission and doing all my own labor. I feel that if you can keep the transmission cool (with an adequately large cooler)you will greatly extend its life. The BIGGEST ENEMY of an automatic transmission is OVERHEATING. This is just my farm boy opinion Smile

Good point. I'd expect that spinning the tranny faster would generate more heat.
I think if you're already rebuilding the tranny, the power drive is a very cost effective upgrade.
The difference is amazing. The first time we drove it after the
change, we spun the tires starting out from a light; just weren't used to all that power.
It's also nice that you don't have to change the speedo gear.

Rich,

AFAIC you made a good decision. Make sure you install an oil cooler with a
fan on it and a thermostat to control the fan. Manny probably told you to
run Valvoline full synthetic trans fluid as well.
