Gary,
> I just missed a phone call from an 855 area code. I can't find an 855 area listed anywhere.

According to Quora:
A phone number prefixed with “/855/” may seem like a sketchy number that
airs on late night infomercials. It's not exactly an /area code/. It's a
toll free prefix.

855 is a toll free number and is not the actual number that called you. This is because 855 numbers do NOT make outbound calls. It is a spoofed number that they want you to call back on. One word of warning is when you call any of the toll free 800 numbers your number will be displayed (and probably recorded) on their end even if you have caller id blocked. The logic behind this display of your number is they are paying for the call and have the right to know who is calling.

This is one of the type of calls that I return using Skype. (If, I would ever return one.) No way to trace call or displayed number to me. Even paranoid people have reasons.

We still have a payphone at the airport. I occasionally use it for these types of return calls.
I only use my cellphone for outbound calls and I seldom give out that number to anyone. I usually can not hear it ring on inbound calls and I have no voice mail on it. When I do see a missed call displayed, I ignore it unless I recognize the number.
