Any one using an Android tablet as their GPS? Sam's has an apparently decent 8" tablet on sale. Questions that I am interested in;
1. Google Maps when not connected to WiFi. Can your trip be saved to the tablet?
2. POI's
I intend to replace my much disliked Magellan GPS.

When I use my Android phone in Canada, I turn data off. I can set a route
while connected to Wi-Fi and so far it seems to track to its destination.
So you get a one-and-done. However, it'll still track you on the overhead
map. I had some trouble with this in Ireland in 2013 but I might have still
had my iPhone at that time.

I am using a Samsung Tab2.

Instead of using Google Maps I use Here WeGo with downloadable maps.
Works nice, but does not support height or weight related routing. POIs
are available as well, but I rarely use them. The only issue I have had
with the tablet is heat. As it needs to be connected to power, you
better make sure that the sun isn't shining onto the back of the tablet.
Otherwise it will stop charging. Not nice, but happened twice. It still
brought me to my destination.

I do, you can download the maps offline, you just need to plan ahead and
make sure you save them. You can have it save the route only, or you can
select an area and then have it download the whole area. There are a
couple GPS apps you can buy that have full offline maps too.

I'm not sure if the POIs work when you're offline. If your cellphone
provider allows you can tether to your phone and use data from there.

Make sure the tablet has GPS, some do not (like most of the Amazon Fire
Tablets).

I use Google Maps on an Android. You can download a route or map.

You can use POI (.kmz) files and save them in "My Maps" online. But I
cannot find a way to make them available offline. Also, I got this message
on trying to load the Walmart file from
http://www.discoveryowners.com/test.asp "My Maps will only import the first
10 layers and 2000 features from this KML file". This equated to 199
separate WalMart SuperCenters. Looks like about 2/3 of the nation.

I use "RVParky" for points of interest but ya still have to be connected by
data or wifi.

Ethan's note was important - not all tablets will have a GPS receiver. In fact, if it's a low cost cheapo tablet, you're almost guaranteed it doesn't. You can still use it for offline maps, but you won't get a position out of it.

I've used offline google maps before, but even if you have the region downloaded I don't believe it will be able to map while offline.
