G,day!
Here are the photos of our inaugural rally held at the Elvis Festival in Parkes NSW. We had over 15 percent of Aussie GMC's in attendance and over 30 percent of owners. We also got media coverage in the local paper and two TV stations as well as opening our Motorhomes to the public to promote the legacy of the classic GMC motorhome. Just as importantly we had a great time and loved the comradare and idea sharing. A great success by all accounts. Hope you all enjoy the journey in pictures as much as we did for real http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/aussie-gmc-rally/p61962-imag2086-1.html. You can also see the article from the local newspaper at this link http://www.parkesphoenix.com.au/cant-help-falling-in-love-with-gmc-motorhomes/

Mark,

That was GREAT! Now we've got to persuade Kim Weeks to at the very least
post a link to the photos in the GMCMI newsletter so all the non-on-line
folks can join the fun.

I see some converted to right hand drive/entry, some l;eft stock. Is this optional, or are some 'grandfathered' or what?

The regulations vary from state to state.

In New South Wales if you want full use of the GMC you have to convert it to
RHD and move the door. However, the guy I bought The Blue Streak from
converted it to RHD but didn't move the door. When I bought it he told me
never to let the registration lapse which made me suspect some funny
business went on between him and the guy that approved the registration.

You can also get Historic Vehicle registration with a log book that allows
you to drive a vehicle 60 days a year. You only use a day when the vehicle
is actually being driven.

Thanks for the clarification. It soubnds as if, assuming you weren't full timing, some preplanning would make 60 driving days a year sufficient for most users. If you were on the road all the time in left lane country, you'd likely want right hand drive anyhow wouldn't you? The door's kind of a wash but if it had to move it could without a lot of histrionics.

Johnny,

Even if you're full timing 60 days probably will be enough. The good news is
that New South Wales (NSW) is considering going to 90 days and that would be
perfect. I reckon with 90 days a year I could circumnavigate / crisscross
Australia without a problem.

If the Australian state you live in allows the vehicle to remain LHD
converting to RHD is a personal decision. I for one; would not like to drive
a vehicle as large as a GMC on the right side of the road sitting in the
left front seat, however, to each their own.

In NSW if you have historic vehicle plates (60 driving days) you don't have
to convert the vehicle to RHD if you meet certain conditions. I can't
remember what they are off the top of my head.

I also have my Dad's 1968 Type III Squareback VW here which is not RHD and
will be importing a 1946 Chrysler Town & Country Convertible Woodie which
also will remain LHD.

My experience with the door is as follows: when I drove The Blue Streak to
Sydney from country NSW I stopped every so often got out, lifted the hoods
looked around, looked under the coach, walked around, felt the wheels, etc
to see if anything was amiss even though it was running fine. The last time
I did that I was on the freeway and when I went to open the door a semi had
just passed and I almost got sucked out the door. Not fun! It was an easy
fix. I attached a small chain with a hook on it to the wall next to the door
that would only allow the door to open 6 inches or so. Before opening the
door I slip the hook over the custom handle on the inside of the door, open
the door, look out to the rear, and if nothings coming, unhook the chain and
open the door fully.

As far as moving the door goes keep in mind that a hell of a lot of the
electric wiring is on that side of the coach and when you move it, it
becomes a suicide door.

Rob M.

Air Farce M35 (deuce and a half) around Lakenheath would make you swap side I suspect. Having seen what Dunahigh did with doors, it looks as if you were going to the trouble, you'd go ahead and move the hinges and latch. The electrics hafta be rerouted either above or below. It would propbably make sense to buy a shell and do all the mods with nothing inside. You would simply wire it down the new driver's side.

IIRC you can flip the hinges over and they'll work on the other side but I
don't think you can do that with the latch.

However, I vaguely remember that those latches are also used on GMC truck
doors so you should be able to find one for the US drivers side.

Mark,

Thanks Mate!

I'll file this in my RHD conversion folder and when I get some time find the
part numbers. If they're cheap I'll buy a couple so I'll have them in case I
or someone else wants to move the door.
