Hi All Friends,

I know enough about AC systems to occasionally get in trouble.
And I've read and reread the thread about the change to HC-22a, a while back on the forum.
The rooftop Duotherm unit starts and runs good, cools about a 5 to 6 maybe a 7 on a scale of 10 (it's cool not cold outlet air ). I haven't found Doracool HC-22a in small cans size (30 lbs. equivalent size only).
My question.
Since Duracool HC-12a (I have on hand) works with any oil and I'd be replacing the freon completely,
can HC-12a work (the same or better) in a R22 system?
Thanks you, for the wisdom and advice.

It's a hermetic sealed system. It should not need topping off. If it is low then you need to find and repair the leak. There are no shraders so tubes need to be cut and valves soldered in. If there is positive charge in the system you first need a detector tool to find the leak. Most likely the condenser coil bad as that gets most outside abuse. The unit takes so little charge I would go with real R22 as cost is low due to low pounds.
Is cooling poor with compressor running, or is it a thermostat issue shutting off too soon? If so be sure the sensor bulb is not contacting the evaporator or it will think it is cold in the room and short cycle. If you are successful in actually repairing, you need to pull a vacuum before recharg.

Thank you both for your assistance.
Will order a kit when weather gets a little less wet.
